As a very pro-FOSS person, this is a good run-down on some major problems in the space.

Too many have adopted a "Dark Souls Community" mindset, where the abstruse nature of current FOSS applications is a part of it's identity that should never be remedied.

We need to overthrow these people.

Mozilla should've never touched ai. Mozilla exists because of the web and its users. Ai exploits the web and its users. It's absolutely counter to what Mozilla and Firefox stood for.
Something that hasn't been made clear: Firefox will have an option to completely disable all AI features.

We've been calling it the AI kill switch internally. I'm sure it'll ship with a less murderous name, but that's how seriously and absolutely we're taking this.

We noticed a rising interest regarding the use of AI in browsers. To be clear about our position on this: Zen currently is disabling all AI features included in Firefox and will continue to do so.

AI has actively made life worse for literally everyone

- tech is now more expensive
- you cannot trust most media of reality anymore
- programs barely function
- energy prices
- literal psychosis
- your voice can be literally stolen for evil
- more spyware

but hey, you can avoid paying an artist.

I feel the dilemma is, that I feel responsible for being friendly and welcoming to make the experience nicer for newcomers to OSS, who may not yet know the manner well.

But with AI messing this up, it's really hard to tell if it's a human behind I should take care or just AI doing terrible work.

This is a new sort of post for me. Trust in OSS is a thing I care a lot about. This post is my attempt to frame AI slop PRs as an attack on trust in open source.

The changed code is a small fraction of an open source contribution. Your commitment to understand the issue, how your proposed solution fits with the project, and be ready to own and push the review process forward is the biggest chunk of the work. Your effort is the contribution, not the code.

The original React2shell PoC is now public. This is as bad as it gets – full RCE. You must upgrade now. There are mitigations in place in CDNs including Cloudflare, Netlify, Vercel and AWS (and sites on Workers aren't vulnerable to this sort of attack), but there are variants in the wild now.
