New paper from Sasha Bishop’s PhD in the lab - we combine quan gen with resurrection ecology to examine plant evolution in light of global change.

The take-home is that constraints among floral traits have ⬆️ in strength leading to a decline in the rate of adaptation by 96% over a 9-yr time span.
A resurrection experiment reveals reduced adaptive potential in a common agricultural weed https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.06.03.657543v1

The Merlin Bird ID app wouldn’t exist #WithoutNSF. 🪶
I've been taking early walks in the park to watch and listen to birds for my sanity, and the Merlin Bird ID app has been indispensable for identifying bird songs.

Merlin was funded by a grant from the NSF, the science funding agency that Trump is trying to destroy.

Google wouldn’t exist #WithoutNSF. Page and Brin started Google based on NSF-funded research they did at Stanford, which has made Stanford, Google, and lots of other people a lot of money. It’s made the rest of us stupid but that’s another topic.

🧪 Data update on NSF grant terminations

Including last Friday's terminations, STEM education grants now account for...

54% of terminated NSF grants (751 of 1381)
75% of terminated NSF funding ($590M of $783M)

The next generation of scientists is being targeted.

#WithoutNSF my research on plant adaptation won’t receive the critical funding it needs to continue studying weediness, herbicide resistance, and other plant traits that improve agriculture.
