„It was a shock for us in the geosciences,” recalls a colleague, who models tsunamis at the GFZ. “Theoretically, we knew that such severe quakes could occur, but the extent of the rupture zone over more than 1,000 kilometres and the devastating floods in particular took us all by surprise.” 👇🏻
The 2004 tsunami showed us the urgent need for an early warning system.

Very bad news from #Myanmar where a 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook the region near Mandalay. For a comparison: This is the about the same strength as the devastating quakes in Türkiye and Syria in 2023. We will update our pages for more information soon.
