The systemic damage this fiscal inertia is creating is awful and deeply inhumane. The disconnect between the cost of legally protected provision and what schools are provided with to deliver, means children, their families and those who teach them ultimately pay the price.
As the Spring Statement beckons, no obvious sign of the Treasury, DfE and MHCLG hammering out a deal on what to do about this

Until they do, expect more briefings about SEND's 'existential' financial risk to councils - but bear in mind that real kids bear genuine existential risk here

Really pleased to have launched this today at @ascl-uk.bsky.social.

Please do share/engage - we're hoping to build a national resource which shares examples of good practice that exist in the system.

This Special school leader agrees. My funding settlement is increasingly disconnected from the cost of safely & effectively providing what our pupils require. There is something deeply troubling both nationally & locally about placing legal requirements upon schools & then choosing not to fund them.

NAHT Senior Policy Advisor, Rob Williams, yesterday told the Education Committee that school leaders worry about not being able to provide for the needs of pupils with SEND as a result of funding pressures on schools.

It great to see @thenfer.bsky.social shining a light on the recruitment and retention challenges in the Specialist sector. For too long Government policy on schools workforce matters has lacked consideration of the difficulties we face and how to address them. #SEND

Really important work here by @thenfer.bsky.social
Today we have published new research on the special schools workforce in England: an under-researched sector that can get neglected and misunderstood in policymaking.

Part 1 looks at staffing, and part 2 next week will have even more insights 👀

Great to be at @schoolsnortheast.bsky.social last week to introduce the Inclusion Expert Advisory Group, which I'm pleased to be chairing.

Reforming the SEND system is the most important area of focus for us in the next 5-10 years.
