I watch all sorts of films. I like most of them, but few as much as Hard Target. I will say various things about those films here.

The Heroin Busters (1977): An undercover cop infiltrates a drug smuggling gang. He’s so undercover though that cops keep getting in his way. Decent crime film with a few good action scenes and a likeable hero. Does a good job showing different levels of the drug world.

The Big Racket (1976): A determined cop attempts to take down a group of racketeers with help from unusual allies. Gets madder and madder as it goes on, culminating in a huge shoot out. Some great action set pieces and a funky score. Great stuff.

The Long Good Friday (1980): A London gangster tries to secure a property deal with some American colleagues at the same time as his colleagues are being targeted by Irish terrorists. An excellent gangster film with occasional bursts of brutal violence. Hoskins is brilliant in it

The Exterminator (1980): After his best friend is crippled by muggers, a Vietnam veteran becomes a vigilante in New York. Very violent and very unflattering of New York. It’s cheap and nasty but it’s a great exploitation film. Touches on the effects of PTSD too.

The Annihilators (1985): After a member is killed by a gang, a group of pals from. Petal descend on Atlanta to rid the streets of crime. Has a bit of an A Team vibe but much more violent. Some old looking gang members but it’s a lot of fun with a bit of a twist at the end too.

The Great Outdoors (1988): A family’s holiday is interrupted by the arrival of their brash relatives. Sometimes feels like a series of sketches, some which work and some which don’t, but it has quite a sweet ending. Aykroyd and Candy are on top form too.

Neo Chinpira: Zoom Goes the Bullet (1991): An aspiring gangster is given a job that may land him in prison, and he strikes up a relationship with an odd young woman. A quirky yakuza film showing the lower levels of the world and the lengths some go to avoid trouble. Pretty funny.

Ms. 45 (1981): A young mute woman is raped on her way home from work, and then again when she gets home by a burglar. She kills the burglar then uses his gun to take out predatory men. Very stylish with a fascinating main character and a grimy New York as a character in itself.

Predestination (2014): A time travelling law enforcer travels to 1975 to prevent a huge bomb attack in New York. It gets complicated. A mind bending trip that doesn’t always feel like sci fi, given its setting for the most part and its noirish vibe. Snook is magnificent too. A really good film.

Mission: Impossible (1996): A team of spies are betrayed by one of their own in a search for a list of undercover agents. Pretty convoluted at times but some amazing set pieces which set the tone for the rest of the series. Damn fine action thriller.

Black Bag (2025): A spy married to another spy finds out one of his colleagues is a traitor, possibly his own wife. He uses unusual methods to find out who. An action light spy thriller that is immaculately written, with two of the best actors of all time as leads. Brilliant.

Police Story (1985): A brave cop tries to protect a female witness who can help take down a drug lord. She doesn’t want to be a witness though. Some silly slapstick comedy in the middle bookended by some incredible action sequences, courtesy of Chan as both star and director.

The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023): A travelling knife salesman stops for petrol but as they’re waiting on a delivery he has to wait at a diner. Two bank robbers show up and all hell breaks loose. Fairly simple in terms of plot but looks great and builds tension brilliantly.

St Elmo’s Fire (1985): A group of friends who have just graduated from university find their relationships with each other evolving in different ways. Well made, very well performed but unfortunately about a group of sociopathic spoilt rich kids. Has aged remarkably badly. Awful stuff.

Midnight Special (2016): A young boy with magic powers is rescued from a religious cult by his father. They are pursued by the cult and the feds. Really unusual way of portraying this kind of film, with great performances and a touching father/son relationship. Uniquely lovely.

The Ambulance (1990): A chap is smitten with a woman he sees every day, but when he tries to ask her out she collapses and is taken away in an ambulance. He tries to find her. Zany action thriller with a few good action sequences and an often manic Eric Roberts. Oddly enjoyable.

Sherlock Holmes (2009): After a practitioner of black magic is hanged by the state, he apparently rises from the dead and starts a reign of terror. Holmes and Watson try to figure out his scheme. More martial arts than one might expect from a Holmes film, but somehow this works well.
October 13, 2025 at 5:25 AM
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939): Sherlock Holmes is asked to save a young rich guy from a family curse that involves being killed by a dog. One of the most famous detective stories and Rathbone is great as Holmes. Very entertaining film. Odd view of Devon though.

The Terror of the Tongs (1961): A British sea captain in Hong Kong tries to uncover a secret criminal organisation after they murder his daughter. Ludicrously racist but is a fairly engaging film if you can overlook that. Definitely a product of its time.
October 9, 2025 at 8:33 AM
Yesterday’s Enemy (1959): A retreating British battalion in Burma in WWII encounter a village taken by the Japanese. They take it but face difficult choices afterwards. Excellent antiwar war film with a superb cast. The fact it was done in a studio makes it even more impressive given how it looks.
October 9, 2025 at 6:42 AM
The Camp on Blood Island (1958): Prisoners in a Japanese POW camp find out the war has actually ended but their captors have yet to be informed. They try to keep it that way lest they be slaughtered. Intriguing plot and a tense film let down a bit by poorly portrayed villains.

Pusher (1996): Over the course of a week, a street dealer gets into a huge debt with a vicious gangster and tries to get money together to pay him off. Starts slowly and gets more and more frantic as it goes on. Maintains an air of unpredictability all the way through. Excellent.
October 8, 2025 at 5:35 AM
Rush (2013): The rivalry between Hunt and Lauda is explored from their meeting lower down the F1 food chain to the crash that nearly killed Lauda. The two leads are excellent and the racing scenes are absolutely incredible. Wonderful attention to detail throughout. Great film.
October 7, 2025 at 8:24 PM
Terminal (2018): A bunch of criminal types hang around an empty train station. Some atrocious accents, wasted talent and a twist you can see coming a mile off. Never gets close to being interesting. Awful film. Looks quite nice though.
October 7, 2025 at 9:09 AM
The Prosecutor (2024): A cop changes occupation and becomes a public prosecutor. He gets heavily involved in the case of a young chap who has been set up trafficking drugs. Part courtroom drama, part action film. Doesn’t always work but the action scenes are tremendous. An oddity.
