I was struck by the colour of this lichen. Brilliant orange against the grey wood and white snow.

Lichens are fungi, not plants. They work closely with their photosynthesizing partner — usually algae — which live inside lichens.

We used to skate here. But our dugout has been too dry the last five years.

No water. No ice. No skating. But beautiful views. Peace.

2/2 The feelings of loneliness were very real for me this year. We are lucky to farm close to Calgary, so we have access to consumers. Pickup days were, by far, the highlights of my week. Most of the time I just had this handsome fellow to talk to.

Our market garden operation will evolve next year.

"I don't really have any friends out there. I just talk to my dog all day," she said."

Bigger farms and higher land prices have made it harder for young people to get a start in the industry, even as older farmers struggle to pass on their land.

Carrot recall. Here's the thing. We should be growing more carrots in #alberta. We should be taking a little more responsibility and washing and peeling them ourselves at home. We should be expecting carrots that look a little wonky, but taste as sweet as candy.

Beautiful afternoon in Cochrane! Loving this snow (not the shovelling or roads).
