Another #booksky review as I clear my list for the year: "How Fascism Works" by Jason Stanley, formerly of Yale.

It's thorough, elegant, and prescient, written in 2017 and playing out today....1/2

I couldn't even finish "Circle of Days" by Ken Follett. It was unreadable. Obviously Stonehenge gets built, but the problem is the banal plot of sex and murder that could have instead explored the politics of resource scarcity. Back to #polisci.

🧵 In #Canada and arguable the US, we just don't have a #resilience culture. We're used to things working, getting what we want, being safe.
How we react, individually and societally, to system failures is very telling. We just don't know how to handle it...1/3

Small wonder the younger generations feel doomed. How can we solve #climate crisis or social injustice when merely asking people not to fatally speed is met with widespread derision?

It is now partisan to ask, "please don't kill my family"

Toronto's speed cameras may be gone, but this time there are no mysterious vandals wielding power tools, no blurry suspect photos and no police investigation.

A lot of resilience and continuity consultants will try to sell you on BC and DR plans, not realizing that's part of your service level agreement with your #tech vendor.

Don't buy a generic plan. To be resilient, invest in #tech infrastructure #resilience. Cloud, auto backup, more servers, etc.

I'm a real stickler for documentation.
I document processes, decisions, and lessons learned.
Why?
Because institutional knowledge prevents repeating mistakes and accelerates recovery after any disruption.

Obviously we all want to have strategic foresight, but how do we do that when the paradigm has changed so completely?
Identify potential disruptions, model impact scenarios, and develop contingency plans.
Only now, we have to expect everything. Easier said than done.

Consistent updates, empathetic engagement, and decisive action build confidence and reinforce stability across teams and stakeholders.

#Climate change is causing more floods, fires, and heat waves, forcing businesses and municipalities to spend more on emergency services, contingency plans, and infrastructure upgrades. With tight budgets and limited staff, many organizations struggle to prepare for these threats.

Canadian businesses and municipalities are under pressure from growing #risks while having limited resources to deal with them. Global conflicts and #trade issues are pushing up the cost of food and energy, for example, which makes it harder for both local governments and small businesses to plan.

Around the world, resources are being used as a tool in political conflicts, and international #sanctions are changing how countries #trade and cooperate. In response, Canadian political leaders are calling for policies that focus on #resilience, fairness, and building a more sustainable economy.

#Canada is exposed to a number of significant #risks. Rising prices for food and energy are being pushed higher by global conflicts and trade problems, while #climate change is bringing more extreme weather, like wildfires, that put pressure on communities and health systems.

Readers are leaders. The best #crisis leaders have context and awareness. They're able to draw on extensive knowledge so that they don't have to make up solutions. Instead, they borrow from a body of knowledge to recreate success. Sometimes #resilience looks like a full bookshelf.

There's a lot of #crisis frameworks out there and a lot of them are written by ex-uniform types who only live in operations mode (love you all, for real).

Business leaders need to be in the #resilience mindset. Accept that crises may happen and have plans to avoid them, not grind through them.
