The College Board shifting to AI grading for the SAT essay isn't surprising, but eliminating the last glimmers of humanness sends a dangerous message to schools that it's acceptable to use AI tools to respond to writers, which is both heartbreaking + a violation of our social contract with students.

Every time I make a video about how writers shouldn’t use generative AI, there’s at least one person in the comments who says their work is indistinguishable from AI and that’s honestly such a good self-burn that I can’t even respond

I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.

This is such an important point about AI pushers: They're not writers. They're not painters. They're not musicians. They're not philosophers or historians. They're not comedians. They are people who wish they were.
I suppose this is why so many authors are incensed about AI “writing” — it’s clearly just something tech dullards created to compensate for their own weaknesses and now they’re projecting that on all of us.

Look, I’m sorry you suck at writing. But don’t make the rest of us suffer your failures.
Writing is thinking.

It’s not a part of the process that can be skipped; it’s the entire point.

This is my worst nightmare. Writers & artists post things that could easily be misinterpreted by AI (or humans)

I’ve had people fail to detect sarcasm in my writing - largely because they were looking for a reason to get riled up.

Sending the police due to AI’s interpretation of a poem? Yikes.
Teenager is woken by police in the middle of the night.

“As it turns out, a poem she had written years ago triggered the alarms of a software called GoGuardian Beacon, which its maker describes as a way to ‘safeguard students from physical harm.’”
Schools Using AI to Send Police to Students' Homes
Schools are employing dubious AI-powered software to accuse teenagers of wanting to harm themselves — and sending the police to their homes.

please don't use AI for your book covers. you're stabbing artists in the back when you do that.

We need to ostracise writers who use generative AI. For any reason. No exceptions.
