Our Head of Advocacy and Policy, Caitlin Boswell, responds to the Spring Statement:

"This was a missed opportunity to raise vital funds for our country by taxing the most wealthy. Announcing further cuts to welfare is a choice the Government doesn’t need to make."

This government says they're cutting benefits to encourage people to work.

But the DWP & OBR between them haven't yet been able to forecast any impact on employment outcomes.

They're causing huge hardship without any analysis of whether it will even help meet their goals.

We're in Westminster with @patmillsuk.bsky.social today calling for extreme wealth (£10m+) to be taxed more.

Cuts to benefits announced today have clearly been motivated by a desire to make short-term savings to meet arbitrary fiscal rules. They're not going to help ill and disabled people, they're only going to create more problems.

We fear child poverty levels will rise as a direct result of the welfare reforms announced today.

870k children live in families that receive PIP & 290k of these are already in poverty.

A reduction in income for families with a disabled parent means more children will suffer.

🚨NEW: Ofgem price cap raises by 6.4%, meaning customers will pay £111 more on average (per year) on energy bills.

Higher energy costs aren’t just due to rising gas prices. Companies are exploiting our dysfunctional energy system for profit.

Here’s how they do it. 🧵

It was good to see the new emphasis on living standards in the Prime Minister’s speech today. There is no point in economic growth that doesn’t improve people’s economic security and end the cost of living crisis. 🧵
