An update on how we're thinking about emerging technology at DBCo and what that means for the future of our practice.
As Carl Sagan famously said, "there are things we know, things we don't know, and things we don't know we don't know." That description feels especially relevant as we collectively wrestle with AI and how to incorporate it into our work.

For our work with GitHub we wanted to go deep into those details that their core audience of developers would appreciate. So we built a custom photo-to-ASCII generator. We've open sourced the code if you want to try it for yourself!
We found many ways to turn code into interactive art for the GitHub Shop. One of our favorite details? An ASCII generator that transforms images into pure, character-based art—lightweight, performant, and just plain fun. Link to the code below.

Some more explorations from what we did with Replit and the concept of a "programmable brand".
We drew inspiration from the REPL (Read-Evaluate-Print Loop), reflecting @replit’s mission to empower builders to transform ideas into apps at lightning speed—capturing the magic of bringing ideas to life through code.

Photography and art direction we executed from Loom's pop up shop in 2022. Big challenge to keep this creative while maintaining a tight budget, but we were able to dip most of our energy into our key product (the Cancelled Meetings Candle) and keep the rest in studio.

It was a joy to collaborate with Dinamo Typefaces on this!
Together with @abcdinamo.bsky.social, we created a custom font for Replit—Diatype Replit Screen: a modern nod to the pixelated roots of programming.

This was fun.
The best part about running a design studio is working with your friends: last year we got to help our friend Andy at Moff's Pizza build out their pizza truck. Absolute dream job.

More work from our engagement with @github.com Shop. We built a design system to set a new baseline of excellence: a robust type system, a component and animation library, and a color theming system that allows room to grow — all while meeting a high bar for accessibility.

Designing and building for GitHub means obsessing over some details that may be missed by the casual visitor. But for GitHub’s developer-centric brand we wanted to bring some magic. Like being able to navigate and purchase items purely from the CIL we embedded in the search bar.
For GitHub Shop, we didn’t just build a store—we built a playground for developers.

One of our favorite hidden details is search input that transforms into an interactive CLI, letting developers shop, navigate, and even checkout—all with code.

GitHub has been a constant for us—and millions of developers—for years.

That’s why designing the new @github Shop felt personal. As developers ourselves, we built it with care, craft, and hidden gems—our tribute to the community who inspire us.

New from DBCo: The GitHub Shop isn’t just a store—it’s an extension of GitHub’s radically developer-first spirit.

We crafted a visual identity to connect with and inspire developers, migrating their existing platform to Shopify, refreshing the design, and capturing it all in a custom photoshoot.

An Update from DBCo

We brought on a third partner, Jordan Egstad, who’s an incredible creative director, designer, and developer. He's coming to us from Instrument and are lucky to have him on board. Egstad has been working with us for a while but it's taken till now to let you all know because...

Also, my view is that it is not productive or helpful to give time or money to a party.

To make a difference, donate and volunteer directly with candidates you believe in. Ask candidates what they need and give THEM your time and treasure. Not a political party.
Hey Megan! Any tips for someone looking to be more active in local politics?

BIG NEWS: A Wyoming judge just struck down WY's abortion bans.

And get this: The judge invoked a constitutional amendment codifying a right to make health care decisions... that was passed in 2012 by conservatives who thought it'd screw Obamacare! Just backfired.

We explained this lawsuit here:
How Attacks Against Obamacare Turned Into Tools to Protect Abortion Access
Conservatives amended state constitutions to affirm broad rights for people to choose their health care. Now abortion rights proponents are taking them at their word.
