Once you understand this basic dynamic, almost everything Trump does becomes more legible.
It's just enormously important to understand that the goal of this tariff policy isn't to raise money or to increase manufacturing in the United States. The goal is to make some of the nation's largest companies subject to Trump's personal discretion and dependent on his favor.

It actually dates back farther than that, to Owen Thomas's pioneering critical coverage at Valleywag, but the point remains: Musk has been at war with the media for 15 years, over factual, reasonable criticism that everyone should have listened to and learned from.

I've worked firsthand with students who were part of these programs. Cutting back on support for the next generation of scientists and engineers is going to bite America in the ass.

The United States has the best university research programs in the world. It won't much longer at this rate.

If the year 2020 were a person, it would already be printing & selling bumper stickers and T-shirts that read “Miss me yet?” and “‘Worst year ever,’ huh?”

Why is there so much love for IKEA? I ordered a couch from them & got no notice it was canceled — twice. Their solution? Order a third time. No offer of a discount or expedited shipping. They want me to wait without a couch another week & call again to find out whether it’s really showing up.

Just in case people don't know the context, this is a policy called splitting the letters, developed by fundamentalist Christians to use feminist and queer language and culture to split the T off and then turn the others against each other.

You can watch their 2017 conference planning it.
UPDATE: The National Park Service have now removed “queer” and the “Q+” from the web page for stonewall, along with any mentions of transgender people.
