Word of the Day is one I keep posting at the end of the year, hoping its time will come.

‘Respair’, from the 16th century, is fresh hope, and a recovery from despair.

Here’s to a few drops of respair in 2025.

Hooligan is different - to blow a hoolie in British English means to be extremely windy. It’s likely that ‘hooligan’ is based on the name of a fictional rowdy family in a music hall song of the 1890s, and a comic character called Hooligan featured in the magazine Funny Folks.
Again, being an American I got that wrong. I always thought that a Hooligan was a trouble making young individual/s. If I saw a group of rowdy teens, I would call them a bunch of Hooligans. Thank you for setting me straight on that.

I love Ian Hislop but it’s worth noting that most of us would balk at the prospect of publicly admonishing a wrongdoer whose conduct you condemn in this way. I did it once to the UKIP/Reform/Brexit twerp Richard Tice but that took exactly zero guts.
This is speaking truth to actual power…

The original ‘tosspot’, in the 16th century, was someone who ‘tossed back’ their ‘pot’ of beer and then immediately went back for another.

Jeremy Clarkson, who owes his fame & fortune in large part to the BBC, sneers at the brilliant @vicderbyshire.bsky.social for being ‘classic BBC’ when she uses *his own words* to describe his position.
“So it’s not about you, it’s not about your farm and the fact you bought a farm to avoid inheritance tax?”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social speaks to Jeremy Clarkson at the farmers’ protest in Westminster where thousands of farmers are protesting the government’s inheritance tax plans.
