Excellent use of history about egregious decisions made by the Canadian government, then and now, written by friend and colleague Ishita Pande: www.theglobeandmail.com/life/first-p...
When my parents were denied a tourist visa for a family vacation in Canada, it felt like history repeating itself
I convinced my parents to travel from India to spend time with my family, but even though I have made a home here, it feels like I do not belong

Excellent news. I met Desiree a year or so ago when she was in Kingston to help launch *Statesman of the Piano.* She gave me some suggestions for work on Black archives, which turned out to be crucial for my archives seminar. A real educator. Congrats Desiree -- Concordia is lucky to have you!

"A university that is not fully free is nothing more than a business of servility. You can't teach under boot heels; you can't speak in the face of the walls of prisons; you can't study when arms threaten." Foucault speaking at a rally of 600 university students, Brazil, October 1975.

It was truly a wonderful experience ... so great to meet McMaster history people, all doing such interesting, vital work. And now with a soundtrack!
Still processing the amazing lecture @stevenmaynard.bsky.social gave here at McMaster last week on Foucault and his generous contributions to our graduate students’ research plans. It was a full day of all the intensities of academia & we must celebrate through song! open.spotify.com/track/32UM21...

Excellent round-up by @lanrickbennett.bsky.social of resources on Jackie Shane for #BlackHistoryMonth. Jackie's decision in the 1950s to leave a transphobic and racist U.S. behind is really resonating today. Not that things were so much better on this side of the border, but ...
February 21st of #BlackHistoryMonth in #TorontoDanforth Who was Jackie Shane?

Jackie Shane was born in Nashville on May 15, 1940, and grew up as a Black transgender child in the Jim Crow South. But she made her name after she moved to Toronto around 1959, becoming a force in our music scene.
