this week, as a kindness to everyone you know who is adopted, maybe refrain from referring to yourself as an “orphan” bc you’re mad your parents are voting differently than you. also please don’t jokingly ask others to “adopt” you. community is varied and strong and that’s good enough on its own

November is National Adoption Awareness Month. It started as an initiative by MA governor Mike Dukakis. The “awareness” has to do with promoting #adoption and nothing at all to do with the experience of being adopted. Many of us hate NAAM, and we need to stand ready to support each other.
Every session with my therapist is a variation on one theme: being an #adoptee makes me unable either to wholly trust other people or to feel wholly worthy of them.
