He is not wrong. The best I could do while head of school was the prophylactic offering of trying to protect my staff from the worst of it, to preserve a bubble of academic environment.

RIP Joel
I am very saddened to hear that Prof. Joel Primack (UCSC) passed away today. He was a huge figure in the field of galaxy formation & was a mentor to many of today’s leading practitioners. His work — often with Faber & Blumenthal — helped establish the now-standard cold dark matter model of cosmology

Oo! Interesting #GravitationalWave candidate #S251112cm potentially from a *subsolar* mass source

If real, the source is probably has chirp mass ~0.1–0.87 solar masses

Looking at a related phenomenon as part of his research on how AI and everyday practices of science shape each other, D&S's Ranjit Singh explores how LLMs are threatening the open-access research repository arXiv: by effectively *manufacturing* a form of scholarship. datasociety.net/points/on-ar...

Classic!
A little over 23 years ago, I wrote my first paper on white dwarf planetary systems and not only am I fortunate enough to still be able to go looking for them with JWST, that little paper (which almost got rejected) hit 400 citations #astrosci #exoplanets

I've been alerted to a paper in the computer science/artificial intelligence section on arXiv, called The Denario project: Deep knowledge AI agents for scientific discovery by Francisco Villaescusa-Navarro et al. The abstract follows: We present Denario, an AI multi-agent system designed to serve as a scientific research assistant. Denario can perform many different tasks, such as generating ideas, checking the literature, developing research plans, writing and executing code, making plots, and drafting and reviewing a scientific paper.

I'm honestly thinking about writing a book set in 17th century Iceland just to get an excuse to write about necropants.

Also, a fun fact about the Icelandic witch trials is that we burned mostly men for witchcraft.
