Title: The exceedingly tiny bookshop It is no wider than its own narrow door but is easy to find as there is always a queue of eager customers outside. One at a time, they enter to find themselves uncomfortably close to the proprietor. His impeccable suggestions are mote than worth the indignity. In the miniature stockroom a professional contortionist is employed to unpack deliveries and replenish the display. The shelves can accommodate only eleven volumes, but each is chosen with such care that nobody leaves empty handed. On Saturday mornings, a local author reads stories to as many small children as can be wedged into the shop.

Within, hundreds of miles of shelving hold copies of every book ever published. Customers arrive with authors or genres in mind, but the near infinite choice and maze of passages soon overwhelm them. Cars decay in the parking lot as their owners browse for months on end. The bedraggled figures who occasionally stagger from the exit are taken to a nearby hospital, but upon recovering, inevitably "Just pop back to grab a few more books."

A thought for the new term. READING FOR PLEASURE is the most important thing in education: more important than any test scores, or any of the hoops we make our kids jump through. So whatever else you do, please never stop helping kids find books to read & love. It will change their lives! #literacy
