Pulling at his obi, which was crooked and still needed a wash, Husk moved further down the road. It wasn’t long before he heard the creek of the branches above him. He looked up, but found no sign of birds. There was hardly any wind either. Still, it gave him pause. Another sound. Like wood breaking. Like the branches above were ready to fall. He wasn’t drunk enough to be hallucinating. Husk flew back, snapping his wings to fully open. His hand reached for his hip, ready for the familiar hilt of a sword. There was only the same, useless sake gourd tied to his waist with braided rope and nothing else. Dammit. Once he landed back on his feet, he stumbled once more—and felt the hardness of a chest against him. He stood up straight and stilled. He knew any sudden movements could mean death. A hand circled under his chin, holding him in place. “So this is where you go now, my little samurai.” Husk growled, but he dared not move. He looked down, noticing the red claw tips, how sharply they pressed against his chin. “Lord Alastor,” he whispered, then scoffed. “This is supposed to be my day off.” “Oh? I don't recall giving you that.” Alastor leaned forward, just until his face was level with Husk’s right cheek. “Niffty caught you sneaking out.” The little shrine maiden would. And Husk thought she liked him. It was a mistake to look at Alastor, but Husk did so, always tempted—and temptation had always been his most debilitating weakness. A great smile, eyes as red as the harvest moon, complete with the soft tufts of a deer’s ears atop his head. The night may have been dark, but the sharp teeth of that smile was all too clear, belying the outward illusion of a gentle creature. But this was Alastor’s most favored appearance. Husk had to agree that this was more preferable to his other, much more monstrous forms. Oni usually weren’t so easy on the eyes. It was said the oni would live in dark caves or dreadful fortresses, hidden deeply within the forests. Husk would have believed it, if not for Alastor leading him to his very home on that fateful day their deal was made. The home was old, and the roof needed repair, but it was a stately place. The paper of the sliding doors were torn in some aspects, and the tatami mats could have also used a fix, but it was more like a home than Husk could have envisioned. Once they entered, he heard the skittering sound of tiny feet across the floor. “Welcome home!” Niffty rushed so fast, the red and yellow hem of her hakama whirled about her legs in dazzling fashion. More than once, Husk thought it stained, with the way the red in particular was splattered, but he knew better than to question it. He sighed when the young maiden smiled up at him, her eye so wide with glee. “Little Niff, I know you told on me, so if you think you can get away with it by just acting all innocent and—” “I brought you some sake!” She held up a small cup with the clear liquid in one hand, and a giant bottle in the other. It was nearly as big as her tiny body. “It’s the real good stuff!” “...and bringing me some booze, then you’d be right.” Husk quickly snatched up both cup and bottle, taking sips of both in equal measure. He stopped soon after, but only to tell Niffty, “Get me more of this.” “Okay!” Niffty giggled. She was then patted on the head by Alastor, her pale face seeming to light up in reaction. “Good girl. You take care of all my property so well!” “Hee. I do my best, Master!” Husk, still chugging away at his drink, thought Niffty to be a little housewife for Alastor when he met her. He had even thought her to be an oni herself, for no woman in her right mind would choose to live with an oni, who could one day crack her body open and eat her very insides if he felt the need. But Niffty was not of right mind, as Husk soon found out. She was apparently a real ‘oni lover,’ whatever that meant. Perhaps it was why she was ecstatic to become Alastor’s own shrine maiden, cleaning up the grounds of his hidden temples, perhaps even leading lone pilgrims for a place to pray, never knowing it to be their last.
