This is one of the things that I find is most shocking to people outside Minnesota who don’t realize it yet—the scale at which everyone who isn’t white has been forced into a spectrum of hiding.

Very good article drawing out the Tahrir Square comparison.

when conditional federalism favors political alignment over need, long-term outcomes for equity and safety are often negative or uneven, even if short-term gains exist in some areas.

“Stable family structures,” as promoted in many conservative policy frameworks, often function less as neutral social goods and more as economic control systems, especially over women.

exit options determine freedom.

Economists from Amartya Sen to Martha Nussbaum are blunt about this. If leaving is materially impossible, consent is compromised.

Marriage becomes a constraint, not a choice.

Guess what

Sociology and criminology agree on this point:
economic autonomy is the strongest predictor of leaving abuse, stronger than counseling, moral messaging, or family pressure

How long will women have financial freedom

when a policy agenda frames “family breakdown” as the primary problem while opposing:
• wage growth,
• labor protections,
• childcare support,
• reproductive autonomy,
• no-fault divorce,
• education access,

what it’s really doing is reducing women’s bargaining power

From a historical lens, every era that tightened “family stability” norms did so alongside:
• economic precarity,
• moral regulation of women,
• and restricted mobility.

Every era that expanded autonomy saw family forms diversify not bc people hated families, because they could finally choose.

“Stable family structures” are excellent at stability.
They’re also excellent at trapping people who need a door.

The uncomfortable truth is that freedom destabilizes bad systems by design. That includes bad marriages.

any increase in wealth that gives “middle” and lower class people a bit of breathing room will lead to people leaving abusive relationships, and relationships that just don’t work.

If they wanted to fix that they should require 3 years engagement before marriage

Another London sketch dug out of a portfolio, done on a Sunday in 1992 sitting in a doorway on Ludgate Hill looking up to St Paul's. I found another St Paul's drawing where the paper has deteriorated but this one has survived OK.

Why do ICE agents carry guns?
Not one single report of them being shot at!!
Not one single story about apprehending anyone with a gun!!
Take the weapons away from the untrained, unrestrained, incompetent agents. Do it for public safety.

I was telling one of my kids that it was physically impossible for an ad to play between songs on any of the records I own, and they asked "and you only have to pay for it once?" and you could see how strange that seemed. You cannot overstate how many basic rules of media consumption have changed.

Dating from around 1865, this hooded parka from the Aleutian Islands in southern Alaska is made from seal intestines, a naturally waterproof & windproof material. Both robust & decorative, these seal gut parkas would have been used daily to keep warm & dry in this harsh environment.
