Biblical Hebrew nerd ⟡ I love learning about all things Hebrew, Greek, linguistics, HB & LXX ⟡ MDiv student ⟡ Biblical Aramaic now in progress!
Does anyone have any theories re the Old Hebrew -êhu ending contracting to -êw? I'm spending some time with the Gezer Calendar, and Bekins and Ahituv both have the -êw 3ms suffix on a dual form, following Albright. But why? Why not -aw given there are no yod maters in the rest of it either? 📜

Presented at a conference for the first time today! It was so much fun!! What could be better than sharing my nerdy love for cognitive linguistics and the Hebrew Bible?

3 days til I present at a conference for the first time 👀

I have officially written my first conference paper! 🥳 I’ve had so much fun using mental space theory and frame analysis to look at the characterisation of Jael. While I’m a little nervous to present it in a couple of weeks, I’m mainly excited!

I'm currently cutting a paper from journal article style and length to conference paper style and length (for the first time!)...and it is a wild ride.

I easily halved one section. And then when I checked after editing the next section, I had ultimately deleted...2 whole words.

Going back to work on a paper I haven’t touched for a few weeks and finding helpful notes I made on it, including

“What even is this?”

and

“Ahhh I don’t know anything anymore.”

After a busy day with the kids, I settled down for a break. Not 2 minutes later my daughter bursts into the room and sweetly says “Mummy, I want to do some Hebrew with you.” Farewell break. How can I say no to that?!

After front loading my degree with biblical languages, I’m now having to do all the other subjects. I’m doing a theology subject now and was incredibly delighted to use languages knowledge in my essay on the imago Dei. I even got to cite Rachel & @mikeaubrey.bsky.social on Greek prepositions!

I’ve been invited to run a 4-6 week Bible study for my church’s young adults on ‘tougher texts of the Old Testament.’ What should I make sure to include? So far my list includes Judges 19 & a yet-to-be-chosen cherem passage. 📜

After attending SBL last year, I decided that if I was going to feel like an academic imposter, I may as well just go all in. So I submitted an abstract for an Aussie conference, and just found out it got accepted. 🥳

My 7yo was chattering away to me, and just casually asked "How do we know the Bible is true?" Honestly, I was very grateful for my bible college education in that moment! Without it, I'm not sure I could have given a simple but nuanced answer while my other kid was saying "I'm hungry" on repeat.

I was once asked to judge a monastic baking competition, where a monk had prepared a really delicious victoria sponge. It was second to nun.

When the Hebrew reading group gets a little off track…

(For those unfamiliar, כרת בריתו sounds a bit like ‘carrot burrito’)

I did what I swore to myself I would never do again… I didn’t reference as I went and now I have to add in references for an 8000 word paper.

I have been working on my current paper for so long that I have lost all semblance of reasonable progress. But today I've written 3000 words & I'm feeling pretty good about myself! It's even mostly making sense, which is a real bonus.

Reading Deuteronomy in Hebrew is so interesting. I had no idea how much it switched back & forth between singular & plural 2nd person pronouns. Even if it’s nearly exact repetition of everything else a couple verses later. Is there a standard explanation for why it does this? 📜

Anyone have a resource recommendation on the history of Lent? Where it came from, how it developed, etc.?

Officially finished reading Joseph & Asenath! It was my first full not-NT-or-LXX Greek reading, and it was so much fun. I highly recommend! My favourite part was the resurrected bees!
