Musings about college radio, pop culture, and audio culture by Jennifer Waits
I loved visiting Bates College radio station WRBC. The station has it all: sticker-covered walls, thrifted furniture, oodles of history, and a signal that artfully bleeds into a religious station as you enter or leave town. Article on @radiosurvivor.bsky.social www.radiosurvivor.com/2025/11/radi...
Radio Station Visit #184: WRBC-FM at Bates College - Radio Survivor
One of my favorite things about tuning in to terrestrial radio is hearing unlikely juxtapositions as stations fade in and out of each other. With religious radio covering much of the left side of the ...

I continue to be amazed by the cool projects undertaken by college radio participants. KXDU operates from a tiny space at University of Denver and does a ton to promote the vibrant music scene on campus. Read my tour on @radiosurvivor.bsky.social www.radiosurvivor.com/2025/11/radi...

Read my report on @radiosurvivor.bsky.social about the recent shutdown of college radio station WCSB at Cleveland State. Students and supporters are fighting this deal, which puts jazz programming on the formerly student-run station's FM channel. They share updates at @xcsbcleveland.bsky.social.

College/community radio is alive and well! My new tour report features @wmpg.org at University of Southern Maine. WMPG has been in the limelight thanks to a documentary making the festival circuit. The buzz within the station was also palpable during my visit.

I was psyched to finally get to visit Wellesley College radio station WZLY. What a history! It began as carrier current station WBS in 1942 and went FM in the 1970s. At 83 years old, it is most likely the longest running women's college radio station in the U.S. www.radiosurvivor.com/2025/10/radi...

Especially in light of the shutdown of @wcsb.bsky.social yesterday, it's important to know that college radio IS thriving and plays a vital role in many students' lives. Thanks to @emwhitenoise.bsky.social for this great piece that takes a closer look at why Gen Z is excited about college radio.
College radio stations are seeing a surge in student interest.

Stations that once struggled to fill airtime are now overflowing with student DJs.

I spoke to 7 college radio stations across the U.S. to understand what is driving the revival:
