"Belonging" is something I don't apologise for not feeling.

R18, no minors, ta.
And yes I am very aware of the fact that any attempt for the ABC to flinch at this will just give the News Corp channel more "lefties losing it!!!!¡!" ammo to pelt it with

like I said, it's a nice fit for them but I'm sure we also know who they're trying to provoke
We'll see how it shakes out, comments I've seen about the ABC News 24 trademark (it doesn't expire until 2030) means you wouldn't be surprised if Aunty gave them a nice talking to

You could argue that they may be running a decoy, but then you wouldn't gone to such lengths to keep it under wraps...

Spi tangent on this:

It *is* kinda curious and fateful about how Canal+ ended up being the group that took over MultiChoice (Naspers' satellite TV service) 📡

Just from comparing how both Canal+ itself and Naspers' M-Net both started - as encrypted over-the-air channels forty-ish years ago... 🤔
Not that such a name is all that inventive anyway

The news24-dot-com name got snapped up quite early (circa 2000?) by the South African Naspers group, dominant there for its newspapers and commercial/satellite TV (although they sold the latter to Canal+ recently)...

Now I can see why News Corp absolutely shut down their Sydney offices today, to keep a lid on Sky News' new name (they lose the licence on using the UK channel's name)

They've eventually decided to go with "News 24", it's been announced 🤔

with the "News" bit in the current News Corp logo style

I still suspect that globalisation aside, a lot of the changes to "what the market will bear" comes from having so many dual income families (not to mention DINKs) around... and to be clear, that's not me saying "oh the woman shouldn't have a job" - far, FAR from it
It's all ends up going in circles because it's easy to blame multiple things. One SMH clickbait headline here today asked us to "look at the other 'I'" when blaming housing woes - ie. investors rather than immigrants

But if it were capable of a simplistic solution, we'd have fixed it 30 years ago
February 20, 2026 at 6:53 AM
of course, the West Island quip also there to point out that the issues are much the same in Aus too, except with more of a critical mass (of people and resources) to exploit

Even the discussions on housing are basically the same, down to questions on capital gains w/ investment housing...
That said, that's also me knowing too much about the NZ political system (from the West Island, admittedlt) that everything feels like going through the motions

those picking up the podcast from the antipodes or elsewhere would still find it reasonable but gosh you almost wish for an "XL" version
February 20, 2026 at 6:45 AM
Good to see that the World Service does this once-a-month Q+A thing on a country's issues, one about NZ popped up today

Gosh though, I can't help but agree with one well-thumbs-up YT comment on (paraph.) "your panel has four pollies and you expect to actually learn anything?" 🫠

I kinda hate how IPL cricket describes its Page playoff games... but the "Qualifier 1/Eliminator/Qualifier 2" nomenclature they use almost fits better on a play-in like this, lol

I'm not sure the NBA gives a name to their two early wildcard games... they're just the "7-8" and "9-10" games, ISTR...
Of course the NBL also soaked up the play-in wildcard round stuff that the NBA has, but at least I know how _that_ works...
February 19, 2026 at 10:40 PM
Looking up the mens' NBL standings and how many games actually were left really confused me... were Adelaide playing one more game than anyone else on Sunday for some reason??

...it's the in-season Ignite Cup final. Doesn't count towards standings, like the NBA Cup equivalent. That'd do it.

Probably one positive at home about having a fixed line connection: I can turn off my hecking phone as I don't need hotspotting from it as the source of all my data... 🫠

I was looking to make my tablet that instead, but it's obvious I don't want to carry that around all the time

Sign Spi is in hyperactive state and has too much energy, part 156:

Getting inspiration to want to iron one's clothes 🫠 (what is pride?)

and getting a foldable tabletop board to reduce the inertia on that (the full size board is a shit to open), after seeing them in hotels

If it works it works!
February 19, 2026 at 9:34 PM
I'm back into a period of data abundance after 3.5 months at home with the fixed line router turned off.

I should be fine with this, especially as it's the one ISP I know that charges by the day (local geeks may figure that one out). That really suits my "away for a fair bit" mood...
February 19, 2026 at 9:04 AM
If you're curious as to how I use it... um, I set the alternate time zone to UTC, which is an option. Makes a lot of sense for someone like me 😅
You have to be really specific in how you customise something.

Some of Apple's widgets aren't always. A recent comment on their clock app says (paraphrased) "Widgets only show me the time in Cupertino. I don't need to know the time there." suggesting they don't know how to change the city 🫠

I love how the desire for skeuomorphism and need to look consistent toys around with Google Maps on CarPlay

It looks a little bit better now, but in the effort to look like an actual speed sign, they once went "metric + not en-US = Irish sign"??

(example of an Irish sign found online shown)

If wondering, it was a @hiddenbrain.bsky.social show on intelligence, the place of IQ tests, etc

was only on podcast yesterday so not actually on their bsky yet

Almost felt like "writing" in, as someone who went through a briefer version of the same thing, but whose IQ landed the other way

(🧵x10)
Pondering a radio show about intelligence makes me wonder how useful some labels even are as we move into understanding the brain as the multi-faceted wonder it is

Yet just labelling everyone with a heavily multi-dimensional "human syndrome" would not be seen as good enough. 🫠
February 18, 2026 at 10:55 AM
This also lined up well with a story that popped up in academic news source The Conversation

from some Uni of Sydney folk who did a study comparing the "profound autism" label proposed by a commission of medical journal The Lancet in 2022, and how that mapped to DSM-5 ASD in a study

I say "more zones" because in the days when 2-section tickets were still available, they still called the go-anywhere ticket a "Zone" ticket, even though they only had one zone

Certainly a long way since the exhortations to "always carry a pair" in your wallet or your back pocket...

Announced last week - Adelaide finally completes its transition off paper tickets from this Friday, with contactless options being available on all trains

Also I wonder if that's AI that generated that ticket though or just artistic licence, with how wonky the "printout" on the ticket is 🫠
Paper MetroTickets are retiring
You will no longer be able to buy or use paper MetroTickets on public transport.

And I'm not high-brow enough to know that a gratuitious wetsuited butt shot is what the people want. I see it enough in my cybershark's reference. Lol.

(happy early #WetsuitWednesday)

(PS: sorry, I didn't post the nice sharp photo-edit I wanted!)
February 17, 2026 at 9:04 AM
Also here's a regular reminder about beach safety.

Don't do it alone; I'm a dope. 😮‍💨

The beach itself was fine-ish but the walk out and back, including the steep hill to get in and out it, almost killed me. (I'm safe at my stay.)

I should've found somewhere lakeside in hindsight, lol.
February 17, 2026 at 8:52 AM
There are other options of course

(early #WetsuitWednesday)
February 17, 2026 at 8:47 AM
All that desire to bring my wetsuit out to one of the pools at my stay (and it's a bit nicer than a 10-metre splash thing many motels have)

Yet all the fear of looking like a weirdo in it, especially if kids with their parent(s) are there >_>
February 17, 2026 at 7:42 AM
Tangentially:
As someone who was weird & numbers-hooked enough that one prized possession was hand-me-down late-80s Gregory's road map, and later 90s maps--

The Central Coast (beyond Gosford or maybe Erina) had an air of mystery about it

...Sydney maps stopped at the Hawkesbury river, after all 😅
The other big "odd vibes" thing, though it would've been more so in the 90s than now, is that the tenpin centre at Bateau Bay has been co-owned with the independent one at C/town for decades.

Even down to the old Astro Lanes name, so I learned today. *That* name reminds me of my tadpole years... 😬
February 17, 2026 at 7:34 AM
To be fair, the "normal" Zone Bowling spots (they dropped the AMF licence ages ago - "zone" as in Timezone who own all that) are still more reasonable than their upmarket Kingpin ones - if you buy multiple games

just... AU$20 for the first game is *ouch*, even if it's only $8 for extra ones usually
It's "quaint" to see how the likes of the old-school centres line up compared to the rising power of the names of Strike and Kingpin/Zone Bowling, being called "dated" and such

Comparing centres focused on general "entertainment" to those as much focused on the *sport*. Big difference.
