The Qantas lounges recently switched from using headlines from The Australian (thank fuck) to that from the Nine papers (inc. the Fin Review) where they could

that's great, but if the headlines stay stuck in mid-December, they aren't exactly "news" 🤔

It's telling that when the History channel in AUS made a return under 9Now as a FAST feed (the original under Foxtel since debranded and placed under their Real Life brand), they ended up licensing H2 rather than the mainline channel

Nine wasn't interested in all the alien conspiracies and so on? 🙃

All these bots promoting OnlyFans etc in their profiles and one "hello" post can bite me. C'mon Bsky "moderation", do better

2026 is another census year for us, the one day where we have to tell the stats department what was happening on one particular evening in August.

At least it's likely to be relatively "normal". We were all locked down from delta-variant Covid risks in August 2021.

Sort of a feeling that our cities had "made it" in the world, maybe? That seems a very provincial way of looking at ourselves, but at a much earlier stage of our life as a nation (if not our states so much), I wouldn't be exactly surprised.

SE Qld certainly has exploded since then.

It's funny how Australia seemed so wowed by the popping up of "international" standard hotels only a few decades ago.

The Wentworth in Sydney and the (now-demolished) Southern Cross in Melbourne in the 60s. The Sheraton at Central Station (now a Sofitel) in Brisbane in 1984, on the lead-up to Expo.

The answer ended up being, unsurprisingly: I was far too drained to make it to midnight - as has been usual for me in recent years - and ended up closing the blinds at 10pm or so.

At least the sleep I got didn't seem in vain.

I hope 2026 is kinder to you. 💙
Trying to judge from the family fireworks, whether the sliver I can see through the city highrises (it's far from zero given the angle) is going to satisfy me for midnight.

Customised interfaces for hotel TVs seem a bit useless when they rarely actually do anything anymore beyond branding

It's actually a hindrance when the TV guide is messed up so much, with a lot looking like they've been loaded based on VIC time (thus an hour off)

and having mixed up channel names

I *still* want what some of what Transperth's web site hero graphic designers are on...

Wet pussy, to promote the free Surf CAT from Stirling to Scarborough Beach. 😸🏄‍♂️

This is up there with the bleak pic of a school kid on a donkey: to touch on/off your SmartRider "or find another way to school" 🤔

Rare that I repost or quote-post stuff

but this, a hundred thousand times.
I'm being glib here but I'm actually very serious about this.

I'm tired of every part of culture being about competition. Everything framed in terms of winners and losers, as though life is zero sum.

It isn't. We make everything better when we see peers and friends, not enemies.
I am not in competition with anyone.

On a positive note, Brisbane has been treating me OK enough.

I expect to be here more often in 2026, maybe it'll help me decipher this place a bit more. Particularly the inner southside... I never have my bearings around there.

It's a bit of a shame that I pretty much have to exit the Google ecosystem for now - because I don't want Gemini 3's image-gen poker machine in front of me and fucking with my horny state. 😩

Doesn't give me too many other phone options, lol.

2026 is practically a fresh slate for me.

It's good to see some refreshing of the Sydney Qantas terminal, now that the airport is finally doing something with it

Except for how the eating options will probably push away even more ppl

Sorry, AU$16 for a sodding lamington (Icebergs or not) is absolutely *wild* 🫠

Doing stuff on the internet lately gives me deep anguish, but I sorta have to keep one outlet open.

Sorry I keep bumping around places.
