I do think, interestingly, this might be the result of cultural differences being more understood, since this is the way online Japanese fandoms have operated for a long time. There's a perception that interacting directly with a creator can be rude because it draws attention to yourself.
I think a big fandom shift in interacting with stuff has gone from people commenting under the created thing whether it be fic or art to people linking it in private discord groups where the person who made it will never see any positive comments left on the thing they made.

Am I allowed to say the difference is Die Hard is well-written and Marvel movies aren't. The quips aren't self-aware or tropey; being with John for an hour we understand he's deeply cynical and tragic. The line doesn't even strike me entirely as a joke because it's played as "he's at his rope's end"
If there's one thing that signals film illiteracy from someone online, it's when they deride humor used in another genre as being "a Marvel-like quip."
Go watch DIE HARD. "No shit, lady! Do you think I'm ordering a pizza?!" is the exact same kind of line that now gets called "quippy"
