Do you know what CLEFS are?

Clefs are symbols at the beginning of a line of written music that indicate the range of the music. This way you know which written pitch corresponds to which performed pitch, for example which note is A, B, C, etc.

The most common clefs are the treble and bass clefs.

Do you know what a CADENCE is?

A cadence is a sequence of chords at the end of a phrase or passage. It signals the end of that phrase, but isn't always conclusive. For example, while a perfect cadence goes from chord V to chord I, an imperfect cadence goes from chord I to chord V.

Do you know what a 'scale' is?

A scale is a series of notes played step-wise (i.e. one after another) in a particular sequence, usually up then down.

For example, C D E F G A B C is a C major scale - play them going up or coming back down, or both.

Do you know what an arpeggio is?

An arpeggio is when several notes from a scale (usually the 1st, 3rd, 5th and maybe 7th notes of the scale) are played up or down in a sequence. It could be any sequence and any number of repetitions, and they usually go up, then down.

Do you know what 'texture' is in music?

It's all about layering - layering of melodies, instruments, harmonies, and so on.
A thick or rich texture might be lots of instruments and melodies at the same time, while a thin texture might be just one or two instruments playing the same or similar lines.

Want to add some spice to your major chord?!

Add a flat 7th note to your major triad to make a dominant 7th.

Try it! Play G, B, D (G major triad) then add an F at the top. Sounds groovy, right?

Notice how it also makes you want to go back to a C major chord...

Do you know what an octave is?

An octave spans 8 whole tones, and the 8th is the same pitch as the 1st, but higher.
If you play a Middle C, or C4, on a piano, and you want to play it 'up one octave', you'll play the C note above that one (C5). The same goes for the octave below (C3).

Want to know what "major" and "minor" mean?

Major and minor are tonalities. This means they affect how the music feels.

A major piece will sound happy and cheerful - a minor piece will sound sad and forlorn.

Did you know that some Western Classical composers would use a major chord to finish a minor piece? This is because it resounds better.

It's called a 'Picardie Third', or 'Tierde de Picardie'.
