So in Steve-news, I handed in my corrected PhD at the weekend, and on Monday got the news that the corrections had been accepted and I'm Dr Steve. So that's nice.

Ten f'king years. Been napping a lot this week.

While looking for something else entirely, I stumbled across this blog post, "Why DIY is a Methodology not an Idealogy". Perhaps useful for those of you contemplating career moves as an artist :) x

Why DIY is a Methodology not an Ideology
Two things have recently inspired me to get this concept out in the world. One is the number of artists who have jumped headlong into doing things on their own in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, an...

A New Year essay, "On Deliberateness" - worth a read if you're pondering resolutions :

On Deliberateness (Happy New Year!)
I wrote this essay on Facebook on Jan 1st 2020. It's weird to read things from the before-times, but this one stands up as pretty solid spiritual and practical advice.

HNY, friends. 2025 has been a complex year of a few highs coupled with a whole lot of soul searching & uncertainty. Here's hoping that some of those things find their joyful resolution in 2026, alongside a whole lot of music, teaching, writing & PhD related shenanigans 🧑‍🎓

Why In The Age Of Online Courses I Still Teach One-on-One.
Weird thing I just remembered. I once did a voice-over job for Microsoft - about 20 years ago. I can't remember what the product was, but I remember that the opening line of the script was Why do we t...

Advice for Playing Fretless Bass
Earlier this year I answered a question on Talkbass about playing fretless bass. It works pretty well as a stand alone essay so I'm reposting it here. Enjoy! A few thoughts on fretless, that for the m...

Seeing white people eulogising Bardot's animal rights activism while overlooking her literal convictions for racist hate speech and support for fascists is not remotely shocking but deeply deeply disappointing.

How to make great music and be normal?
The journey post-remission for a cancer survivor is a really odd one. Firstly, it can take a long, long time to realise just how big the impact on your mental health might be.

I spend an awful lot of time thinking about this moment in the history of King Crimson and it's transformative implications for our understanding of authorship. There's a straight line from here to me seeing my audience as co-creators of my work.

I love those conversations with people who don't get how you can make music up on the spot 🥰
"People don’t believe that improvisers really improvise. So I think you can get some of the spirit of that into comedy. If something happens in the room, try to go with it. I’ve got more from people like EarthBall than I have from Seinfeld.”

Axioms I have zero interest in debating after 52 years on the planet:

"no-one is more interesting drunk or high than they are sober"

Just in case you wonder why I bailed on your Christmas gathering early 🤷

I put out a new album last night :) It's a christmas album with absolutely zero reference to any festival musical tropes whatsoever. But if you're a Bandcamp subscriber, it's my gift to you ;) x

Though I also have a slowly building thesis that Rite Of Spring is the most influential piece in the history of European/American music, given just how many entire genres of music are based on its rhythmic and harmonic innovations.
Listening to On The Corner for the first time in a while and remembering just how much of my music is shaped by Miles' work, from Miles In The Sky to Dark Magus. Possibly the most radically transformative body of recorded music ever produced.

Closing in on 50 years since the start of my media career. I was a mascot for Wimbledon a whole load of times in the late 70s. This is from a picture book called "Let's Go To The Soccer Match" which came out in 77/78. #silkyskills
