We put together this volume on Enlightenment race theories and their lasting impact on colonialism. We start with Kant and then move forward into the 20th century, Nazis, and post-colonial conflict. Many powerful essays on the history of race, anthropology and colonialism.

Downright embarrassed to be reading J.G. Herder's love letters to Karoline Flachsland, as if I were eavesdropping or they should just get a room.

So I am giving up on teaching Baudelaire's The Painter of Modern Life. My grad students all just see him as a creepy, sexist guy lurking on the street. As a student of Susan Buck -Morss, I am taken aback. No longer is he the source of an aesthetics of dandyism, flaneurs, maquilage, modernity etc

BREAKING: ICE deported a Burmese man who doesn’t speak English to South Sudan—a country he’s not from and on the brink of civil war. He refused to sign English-only papers.

They deported him anyway—with 11 others. No hearings. No translators. Court order ignored. This is state-sponsored kidnapping.

In a vast American supermarket, you ask your German sweetheart timidly if she might pick out some bread.
She returns with the statement:

"There is no bread."

1. The account reproduced by John of Winterthur was evidently composed by a Franciscan from Tana who had an antipathy towards the Genoese and tried to make them the main culprits of the subsequent Tatar repressions in 1343.

Book promotion is a vital function of social media. I have come to Bluesky in large part to keep up with my scholarly colleagues. In the old Twitter days I learned a great deal about what was happening in the Republic of Digital Letters and am eager to revive that older tradition from five years ago
I actually like the promo - keeps me up to speed on what's out there and helps me when I get requests from reporters for folks to talk to - go for it early and often. Point about about university/college prestige in messenging is a good one.

Sometimes you really can't read another racial theorist. Tonight's tired summary:German racial thinkers: in the first half of the 19th century they are crack-pot gentleman scholars, in the second half they are dangerous nationalists.

We can't predict the future but we do know what general skills and knowledge will be valuable whatever job you do.
