Hello #microsky! Now that I've made it here, let me introduce myself:
3rd yr PhD uncovering the world of archaeal tubulins 🧬
🦠-iologist by training but dabbling in proteins thanks to @kmichie.bsky.social
Also your friendly neighbourhood @jamsorgsyd.bsky.social secretary ✍️
Breaking up the thesis writing by engaging in some #citizenscience for the Sydney Sea Slugs Census 🤿🐌🪸📸

This was the spot of the day from Wylie's Baths - identified as a Plocamorpherus imperialis on iNaturalist.

Here, we show that deep below, corals and feather stars don’t just share space – they share microbes. Endozoicomonadaceae + Nitrosopumilaceae inhabit both hosts in a “promiscuous” symbiosis that may fuel nitrogen cycling in the deep sea.

Following NASA's recent announcement of a potential biosignature on Mars, I want to replug my colleague @fletcher42.bsky.social's work on exogeoconservation!

As they state - "There is a need to balance the greatest scientific returns with limiting the impact of taking samples."

🚨New #astrobiology Paper Alert🚨

Great work by my colleague Clare Fletcher on publishing another chapter of their thesis which, in a nutshell, aims to stop _certain people_ from putting flags on Mars and trampling the planet. 🧪🪐

PhD exit seminar ✅

So happy I could share the bulk of my PhD where I optimised the expression, purification and (so far unsuccessful) polymerisation of novel eukaryotic-like proteins in Nelly (aka Loki-ASV2).

Listening to Stephanie Nobbs (@snobsi.bsky.social) telling us about the fascinating Asgard archaea isolated from Shark Bay's microbial mats. They isolated a new archaea and assembled its genome and in silico proteome. Found lots of eukaryote-like tubulins + new protein folds

New review out in Annual Review of Marine Science! 🌊🧫
We explore how ammonia-oxidising microbes form symbioses with marine hosts - fueling the nitrogen cycle, fixing carbon, and possibly feeding their hosts.

Symbiotic Ammonia Oxidation in the Marine Environment | Annual Reviews
Ammonia oxidation is a fundamental step in the marine nitrogen cycle, catalyzing the conversion of ammonia to nitrite or nitric oxide and generating reductive power for the autotrophic growth of micro...

Thank you to the #archaea community for making my first #GRC a great one!

I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to present and meet lovely new people! ❤️🦠

Coming from an island country, it was also great to put faces (and personalities) to names I otherwise only see on papers. 👩‍🔬🔬👩‍💻

How do I celebrate my first preprint coming out in the middle of the GRC?

A swim in an Alpine like followed by a glass of Prosecco. 🥂

Half-way through my first GRC and I've;
🦠 Presented a well-received talk
🦠 Walked on a glacier
🦠 Not once had to explain what Asgard Archaea are

Bonjour La Suisse Romande 🇨🇭One day between FEMS2025 and GRS: Archaea! What did I do? Visit the Montreux Jazz Festival of course 🎺 🎶 🎷

The final day of #FEMS2025 is done! Great opening session on extremophiles, an interesting discussion of using microbes as forensic tools and I've left with plenty of microbe nerds to bother the next time I'm in Europe 🦠🤓 Ciao Milano!

Day 2 of #FEMS2025 done!
Loved meeting other microbe nerds and listening to some great talks. Im 100% biased today's session on extremophiles has been my favourite so far 🦠 🥶 🥵🧂 🦠

Loved my first full day at #FEMS2025 🦠 Thank you to everyone who came to chat with me at my poster.

Can't wait to see more great speakers and talk more microbes tomorrow 👩‍🔬

Made it to #FEMS2025 after exploring the city. Catch me tomorrow (Tuesday) at poster 241.15P, Section D to talk Asgard archaea, protein folding and microbial dark matter. 🦠🔬 🦠

Half-way there for my euro summer to round out my PhD! 🌞🦠👩‍🎓

After tearing my ACL early last year, I'm excited to finally get around to 2 international conferences!

Catch me at #FEMS2025, GRC: Archaea (and Montreux Jazz in between 🎺).

Feeling very honored to be in possession of @snobsi.bsky.social’s lucky microscopy bracelet today as I work my way through 30+ slides on three different microscopes 🙃🔬
