I don't really understand why people think copyright itself is a problem. If copyright was done away with and everything was public domain, the obvious effect would be corporations having carte blanche to plagiarize and steal from artists with no repercussions or finincial compensation.
I don't think "generative AI" is any good at doing the things it is hyped up as capable of doing, but I don't care to attack it on copyright grounds. I don't see any way to make it a copyright issue that will not end up restricting freedoms I do not want restricted. I will never respect copyright.

btw machine-moderation to remove CSAM (i.e., actual irl CSAM) from websites is already standard practice. Because 1) it's impossible to manually moderate millions of people, and 2) you want to minimize the need for people to actually look at that kind of disturbing, traumatizing content

Hopefully bluesky walks back this new automated ban system and eases up on the moderation. If they double-down on it, it might just kill the website overnight

And no, "I'll know it when I see it" is not a sufficient answer. Ultimately, any attempt to ban legal art for being icky will only end up serving as ammunition for right wingers and other bad actors to use as a cudgel against minorities, whose existence they'll try to ban by claiming it as icky.

Let's make this clear: if you claim to be leftist, pro-LGBT, pro other minorities etc, then you MUST stand up for freedom of artistic expression, which means defending the right for legal but icky art to exist. Not doing so directly empowers the worst kind of actors wishing to eradicate minorities 🧵
