I finally had the chance to read Karen Hao's Empire of AI and it is excellent! From my understanding, these honest corrections don't detract from, but rather emphasise, the severe natural resource drain these data centres demand.
I have issued two changes to my book regarding the water footprint of data centers. I've detailed the changes and the context behind them here: karendhao.com/20251217/emp.... Given the nature of book changes, I wanted to make sure anyone who has an existing copy of the book is aware.

Just discovered an insane new form of co-intelligence where you briefly share the mind of a great thinker in history and then a portion of their mind travels in yours for the rest of your life. Calling it a "book."

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

hive-mind, know of any research/academic work that has detailed the various ways social media/large platforms have made audits/critical investigation of these platforms practically impossible. exuberant API fees, access only to partial data even when you can pay fee, retaliation again auditors, etc

It's sad that AI conference reviewers use "incremental" as reason to reject a paper -- e.g., "the contribution of this paper is incremental; reject". Where do they think most progress in science comes from, and what eventually fuels big discoveries?

every large public institution (esp, universities & schools) reliant on big tech infrastructure should take note as the "bursting of the AI bubble" will bring these sectors down with it

do you now see how the likes of Oxford signing contracts with OpenAI was a grave mistake

We need new rules for publishing AI-generated research. The teams developing automated AI scientists have customarily submitted their papers to standard refereed venues (journals and conferences) and to arXiv. Often, acceptance has been treated as the dependent variable. 1/
