for over 3 weeks, I've spoken to ICE watchers and organizers across the country: first right after Renee Good's killing — then 2 weeks into my reporting, Alex Pretti was killed.

ICE watchers are being detained and harassed — but they're also stopping ICE abductions and inspiring others to join them
‘Backing down isn’t an option’: Minnesota ICE shootings mobilize Americans to join ICE observer groups
The killings of Minneapolis residents Renee Good and Alex Pretti have inspired people across the US to document federal agents’ activities in their communities

It's near-white out conditions in Chicago as the snow comes down, and tonight's anti-ICE/CBP rally is wrapping up in front of city hall.

But not before the crowd bounces and chants, "I believe that we will win!"

Also, uh, we have more than 100,000 people registered for this ICE watch training tonight. Largest training of it type in history by a long shot. Please join if you've not be trained yet, and share to friends/fam/neighbors!
I recorded this week's newsletter in case you want to watch instead of read. Are we pro or anti Gadsden flag hat? On the one hand, I like reclaiming it. On the other hand, it's hard for me to shake my visceral response to it from the Tea Party days. ezralevin.substack.com/p/how-to-mak...

in trying to understand what makes ICE and CBP so dangerous right now, it is tempting to imagine some new lack of training or experience or professionalism—and not grapple with the truth that a white nationalist movement has put more power and force behind their existing mission

A project to dismantle ICE will be years in the making. This is because you will have opponents [not just in the fascist GOP but also in the Democratic party]. And that means that organizing campaigns will have to be strategic and they will always be subject to being undermined by purported "allies"

Neighbor, you should have made it home to your child, to the bright warmth of his laughter, but our country is at war with its people, and your goodness makes you an enemy, a citizen insurgent.”

Every time I go to the laundromat, it hits me that there is no way the current US president or that Tesla guy has ever done their own laundry—but I have no doubt that Mamdani has.

So my question is this: now that @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is mayor, which household chore will he continue to do?

But, hey, who do I know at BPL, NYPL, and QPL who will stock it in 2026? It *is* a love letter to NYC, after all, and even contains the lines “chaos might mean / without a library.”
