Skydog is a non-profit Mustang Sanctuary in Oregon and Malibu, which rescues wild horses, burros, and reunites equine families torn apart during Bureau of Land Management roundups.
Thousands followed Samson’s close-knit #wildhorse family on Pine Nut range, NV. A petition for their freedom after the BLM trapped them was ignored. 4 generations now live free at Skydog: 32yo Ol’ Mama, her daughter Apple, granddaughter Dumplin’, great grandson Sam and 2 of Samson’s brothers.

Maple, Ladybug, Firefly, and Sedona come in for breakfast. Ladybug surprised us by giving birth to Firefly, a darling #mule, who is funny and curious. His mother and aunties have raised him right, so now he leads this small band. #skydogsanctuary #mule

Mother Majesty’s ears are like reading Braille. They swivel to touch every sound and extract meaning, her other senses honed to a whole other level. Her little #foal Precious is a hero warrior, wise beyond her young age. She nuzzles into her mama, comforting and consoling.

I held my breath for this entire loading, tears streaming down my face. It was a minute of terror for this fierce, #blind #mare following her guiding #foal, but on the other side awaits a brand new, softer life with care, love and understanding. #christmaseve

It’s hard to know what the coming #storm will bring, so we prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Thanks to staff & volunteers working outside in all #weather, we are absolutely prepared. All the #horses and #donkeys have rain blankets, cover, and roofs to keep them dry tonight.

A new band of rescued #wildhorses. Noya, whom we now call Nova, was brought out of the barn to meet some other #mares: Wren, Lacey & Blossom. The introduction went beautifully and the new friends ran with delight. Lacey is protective of her #filly, Blossom, but felt no threat from Nova.

Commodore & Valor are the last 2 additions to Wild Boy’s band before winter. A beautiful reunion with other #wildhorses from the #SouthSteens in #OR. Shortly after this, they were both looking around in awe, the wind in their manes. Their freedom has been restored on territory near their homeland.

Cruiser’s #herd is beautiful and plump, ready for winter with the calories they need + fat to burn on cold, snowy nights. Most of the #mares were kill pen saves with shattered spirits. Today they are the strong, fierce #wildhorses they were born to be with pride, confidence, and dignity.
