Absolutely!!!
I try to be open minded when people engage with climate issues, but this kind of argument about AC is really very silly. You only need replace “cooling” with “heating” to see that using appliances/energy to protect against temperature extremes should not be viewed as some kind of moral sin.

This is very inconsistent with the evidence from top public finance papers.

Their mobility elasticity is high, and is higher for state/local taxes.

Nice to hear @rmetcalfe.bsky.social on @rff.org's Resources Radio podcast. The discussion covers some cool new research with my colleague @sjroth.bsky.social on indoor air pollution. Worth a listen.
Seeing the Invisible: Responses to Indoor Air Pollution, with Robert D. Metcalfe
Robert D. Metcalfe discusses his recent study of indoor air pollution levels in homes and how people respond when made aware of their exposure.

Last week I took thirty of our fantastic environmental economics masters students on a trip out to an offshore wind farm. Lots of interesting discussion about renewable energy, plus there was time for fish & chips on the beach. All in all, a great day out!

🧵 Making the invisible visible: can information about indoor air pollution change behavior and improve welfare?

A fascinating new study by @rmetcalfe.bsky.social & @sjroth.bsky.social sheds light on how revealing hidden environmental risks can lead to meaningful change.

Revealing real-time indoor air pollution cuts it by 17 percent overall, 34 percent when occupied. Lower-income households face worse indoor air pollution. A $1 subsidy for monitors has infinite public value, from @rmetcalfe.bsky.social and Sefi Roth https://www.nber.org/papers/w33510

So much of our research on air pollution is focused on outdoor pollution, but indoors is where we spend 90% of our time. This is a really nice paper with some compelling findings!
Interesting new NBER working paper: Most people worry about outdoor air pollution, but, in many homes, indoor air is worse. A field experiment in London tested whether showing people their indoor pollution levels in real time might change behavior and finds a 17% reduction. 🧵
