Er worden in Amerika inderdaad boeken verboden. En voor ze door rechts werden verboden, werden andere boeken verboden door wat daar liberal heet. Omdat er bepaalde woorden in stonden en zo. Maar dat vertellen bezorgde Nederlandse progressieven er nooit bij.

Jammer dat @detaalstaat.bsky.social met een dergelijk flagrant politiek item komt. Wat Hoogenboom beweert is bovendien onjuist. Het zelfstandig gebruik van een bnw is volkomen normaal en het is voor helemaal niemand onduidelijk wat 'illegalen' betekent.

The word ‘tomato’ started out as ‘tomate’ and came from the Nahuatl word ‘tomatl.’

The academic world is worse off because of the rampant anglicisation of all fields. It means less genuine diversity. As the knowledge of languages deteriorates it will also cause a loss of knowledge, as in the Unenlightened Past™️ people stil wrote in obscure dialects like German and French.
I joined the small (4 person) BMCR Board of Trustees in January.
We took up the question of language immediately. I raised every objection I could think of to English-only publication, but the Senior Editors had rebuttals to all of them.
In the end, I reluctantly agreed with the decision.

Probably every adult language learner will be familiar with the frustrating feeling of wanting to be able to read poetry, discuss serious things and get jokes, only to find that getting simple grammar right and asking where the beach is are actually not that easy. Even the A1-level is a lot of work

I'm now on the level of being able to read some of the simpler poems of Catullus and Martial and bits of Pliny. This already feels like an accomplishment, as real Roman Latin often seems a world away from textbook Latin. But so much remains to be done. #Latin #LearningLatin #classics

Does anybody here have any experience with Oberg's Lingua Latina per se illustrata? I have so far studied the Dutch gymnasium textbook Tirocinium Latinum and now I want to read more Latin. Or should I go straight to Caesar? #Latin #LearningLatin #Classics

Ik heb nu alle lessen van Tirocinium Latinum minstens één keer doorgenomen, hoewel niet allemaal even zorgvuldig. Bepaalde constructies, zoals het gerundivum, zijn best lastig. Maar welk een genoegen om een gedicht van Martialis of Catullus of een brief van Plinius nu zelf te kunnen lezen! #Latijn
