A5 we timetable a bunch of students in a room and facilitate them talking to each other about something related to one of the intended learning outcomes. The AI might now even be able to suggest some good conversation prompts (questions) #LTHEchat

A4 I started off using genAI to reinforce my own sense of smug primacy in HE chemistry. That doesn't work anymore. genAI has moved on since 2022 and now I have to too. #LTHEchat

I see what you did there. #LTHEchat
A2 I see the use of GenAI as a potential preliminary step. i t has the potential to provide some useful interaction and can provide feedback. Limitations being it all seedns sense vheckign and verifying. #LTHEchat

A2 benefit: breadth of "knowledge"; limit: if a student talks to a bot they are missing out on a genuinely social interaction. Bots are for when you'd otherwise be alone. Say, 9pm.

I think academics risk getting too distracted (taking solace) in what AI does badly. @kjhaxton.com gave us a spectacular demonstration of what it does pretty well (study design) and the transformative potential for the teaching-focused STEM academic at #ViCEPHEC25

If I were to label myself a grande dame would that be appropriation? And is there an equally connotation-rich gender-neutral equivalent?

7 years later and I still whisper, “We’re disabled, Daniel, not werewolves” to myself like a sacred mantra whenever I see a non-disabled person discover ableism like it’s the latest hipster indie band.

@mkseery.bsky.social thanks for laying on such an exciting pre-conference dinner for #GRCCERP I feel I can’t use the picture of the fire engine or the fire breathing car, so here is the moon over Portsmouth, NH.

A6 I’d remove the word research from your question and the implicit and explicit segregation. We are all academics. Some of us are pushing the boundaries of knowledge and some of us are pushing the boundaries of knowledge acquisition. #lthechat #donotBloomme
Q6: If you could change one thing about research culture in HE, what would it be — and why?

A4 the rules for REF 2029 continue to reduce the perverse incentives to creatively exclude (relabel) researchers* essentially because their (sub) discipline has lower impact factor journals. #lthechat *best academic thing that ever happened to me, but that wasn’t the intent when it was done.

A3 the single biggest threat is divisive use of the word “scholarship” - don’t allow yourself to be othered, you’re a discipline based pedagogical researcher. #lthechat #reclaimscholarship

A1 research culture is the belief that the lecture theatre is a laboratory where you build on the pedagogical research literature with your own intuition and innovation to generate results, which you publish and profess to aid in further advancing humankind. #lthechat
