This. In the past several years, many have branded their work "AI" for the financial benefits, despite the intense toxicity of the people and tacit assumptions at the center. As communities become conversant in critique and refusal, fragility is on full display as researchers cry out "not all AI". 🧵
That's not possible anywhere because of the bubble. The AI topic is toxic because so many of the key players are toxic.

Responsible researchers have the privilege to unhitch themselves from the "AI" brand at any time. Are you studying wildfire smoke or deforestation using satellite imagery? That used to be "remote sensing" and you can call it that again. Signal processing, image segmentation, structure-from-motion.

Florida also had many more children die from COVID than California.

California and Florida are on opposite ends of the school-closure spectrum and the differences in test scores are a wash.
Some individual schools and districts definitely stayed closed too long but it just isn’t the case that this is some huge, obvious, foreseeable blunder.

Next stop, #kakapo! We’re also working with @dnature.bsky.social to use qPCR in the upcoming 2026 kākāpō breeding season. We’re hoping to use a simple bill swab to sex chicks at a very young age on the islands, so we can prioritise their care as soon as possible. #conservation #genetics

Huge news! Having spent a while studying #kiwi pukupuku, this got me very excited. Finding a remnant mainland population of LSK is probably more significant than finding more #kakapo. Huge respect to those involved and particularly the hunter who found them.

Huge news! Having spent a while studying #kiwi pukupuku, this got me very excited. Finding a remnant mainland population of LSK is probably more significant than finding more #kakapo. Huge respect to those involved and particularly the hunter who found them.
