In 2014, exactly 100 years after the start of WW1, DDB Toronto created this beautifully simple print ad for the Historica Dominion Institute‘s Memory Project, featuring real Canadian Veterans.

The fabulous Terry Thomas appeared in this fun 1970 ad for Gilbey's Gin, along with a very young Rula Lenska.
Born the son of a Finchley butcher in 1911, Thomas often portrayed “disreputable members of the upper classes, especially cads, toffs and bounders.”

Federal Express have always created some of the most entertaining ads.

Take this 2003 example, titled “MBA”. A creative way to demonstrate an otherwise pretty boring message - that FedEx’s platform was so easy that anyone could use it, even someone with an MBA.

This recent ad from New Zealand for Molenberg bread continues the brand’s long-standing message that Molenberg "keeps Kiwis going". And to emphasise the point, they’ve made a 12-hour-long ‘Molenbergathon’ YouTube pre-roll.

I love this ad for Blue Band margarine, likely from the 1920s. The brand was originally Dutch, developed by Van den Bergh and introduced into the UK in 1916 as the war created huge demand for butter substitutes. As the ad states, it's "Just like best butter".

This 2007 ad, called ‘Fired’ for obvious reasons, was created by TBWA/Chiat/Day New York for Nextel Communications, an American mobile operator.

Looks dated but remember it was ‘only’ 18 years ago - the same year that the iPhone was introduced.

A late entry into the Halloween Hall of Fame, and very possibly the scariest 💀. It’s a genuine 1971 ad for the Remco Baby Laugh A-Lot doll.

Before there was Chucky and Freddy, there was Baby Laugh A-Lot.

Happy Halloween 🎃

Often called the scariest ad of all time, this Japanese commercial for tyre retailer Autoway demonstrates the importance of having good winter tires (and also having a spare pair of pants).

The film starts with a health warning, so best avoid if you’re easily shocked.

One of my favourite Halloween ads. Created by German film school Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in 2011, it's a brilliant parody of William Friedkin’s 1973 movie The Exorcist.
The opening theme made Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells a major global success.

Back in 2000, Nike released this ad during NBC’s Olympics coverage, featuring three-time Olympian Suzy Favor Hamilton. There was an immediate backlash; angry viewers complained that the ad encouraged violence against women and it was quickly pulled.

Happy Halloween!

For Halloween 2013, Mini ran an ad highlighting the surprisingly roomy and definitely very safe interior of its MINI Countryman model. The agency was Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners.

There’s been some gloriously scary Halloween-themed ads over the years. Here’s an ad from Australia, made in 2008. It was actually shot in a former summer palace outside Kiev. Agency was Clemenger BBDO.

I enjoyed this IKEA ‘Ghosts’ ad from 2 years ago. A gang of colourful ghosts transforming a drab house to encourage people to be more adventurous with fabrics. Agency was Mother London, director Dougal Wilson.

Almost Halloween, yikes!
Here’s an ad from 1977 featuring Vincent Price, star of more than 100 movies, multiple TV shows (including Batman) and a few ads, including this one in the UK for Haywards Pickles. It’s a great slogan: "The first pickles to bite back".

The Japanese make some crazy ads. Take this 2013 example for beauty brand Esthe Wam. ‘The Sincerest Wish’ is a mix of ridiculous slapstick and sharp satire on vanity. Created by Ogilvy Asia.

RIP Prunella Scales. Best known for her fabulous portrayal of Sybil Fawlty in the late 70s, and "Dotty" in the ‘Every Little Helps’ Tesco campaign by Lowe.
Way back in 1960 she appeared in this ad for Tetley, promoting their still relatively new tea bags.

Trump’s reaction to Ontario's anti-tariff ad featuring a 1987 speech by Ronald Reagan is creating a sh*t-load of free media.
Indeed, Ontario premier Doug Ford claims that this is now “the most successful ad in the history of North America” with over 11.4 billion views worldwide.

I bloody love this, featuring celebrity immigrant Farrokh Bulsara.
"Thank God for Immigrants” was originally used in an art project by British conceptual artist Jeremy Deller during the pandemic to highlight the contributions of immigrants.

This ad from the Canadian province of Ontario uses a 1987 address by Ronald Reagan to send an anti-tariff message to US audiences.

The effect has been immediate - Trump angrily declared yesterday that “ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED."

Elbows up!
