People aren't happy with the state of the economy and the real weakness for the GOP is that independents are less happy about it than they were a year ago. You can't just lie to people about energy prices, they will open their heating bill and see the difference pretty clearly.

Are suicides sensitive to small health events like seasonal allergies? More than 80 mil Americans have seasonal allergies, & these are getting worse as temperatures rise. We show that there are more suicides as pollen levels rise.

Question for #Econsky📉: Can you recommend a paper which implements Callaway and Sant'Anna that carefully describes the specification in methods? (As opposed to write a TWFE specification and mention that it will be estimated with CS.)

It is with great sadness that I learned today of the passing of my friend, mentor, and co-author Dr. Allen Goodman. Allen was an exceptional mentor and was kind, thoughtful, and supportive. I am passing his legacy on, teach the next generation of health economists.

Burnout among emergency physicians and very very common. What is the next step? What do we do? How do we heal physicians so medicine has a future? Otherwise, no matter the technology, we might as well pack up health care and go home. @acepnation.bsky.social @antonyhsu.bsky.social

Hello, I’m an economist in a film. I have pure and perfect knowledge of supply and demand, and, on rare occasions, elasticity. In tense situations, as sweat trickles down my brow, I explain cost and benefit of a decision and pray to god that no one asks about the downstream repercussions of policy.
Hello, I'm an attorney in a film. I have a pure and perfect knowledge of every area of practice in every jurisdiction. Nevertheless, I will be corrected by a plucky law school grad who just passed the bar. After some stubborn resistance, I will silently nod and take her under my wing.
Hello, I'm an English Professor in a film. I have only ever read Moby Dick, Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. I quote them extensively in ways that let you know the film writers were English majors.

Hello, I'm a historian in a film. My office is a massive space filled with Persian rugs, leather couches and massive wooden bookcases. There's a Tiffany lamp on my desk and an original Gutenberg Bible on a stand next to it. I am wearing a tweed suit with five layers.

Thank you, @maxkozlov.bsky.social for this multifaceted discussion. When conducting studies about academic productivity, it is important that authors present a clear takeaway. Otherwise statistics can be hijacked by unscrupulous arguments to undermine academia.
There's an large uptick in papers published in the year before researchers attain tenure, a new analysis shows.
From there it diverges: those in fields that have labs (eg biology, chemistry) keep churning papers, while those that aren't (eg sociology, math) see a decline in papers.

Do academics publish less after getting tenured? Depends on your field
Paper output varies between disciplines, as does the trend after tenure is achieved.

Let’s keep in mind that in bench sciences, pub are teamwork, cranking out multiple a year. Once a faculty member build up momentum, the lab sustains it. In econ, every paper is a fresh start with a small number of coauthors who all pull their weight. It does not sustain itself. #applesandoranges
Publication rates before and after tenure: clear decline post-tenure in non-lab-based fields and sustained in lab-based fields. Super interesting.

Very interesting finding. From personal experience, when women ask to be compensated for this extra work they are called “unreasonable” and “insane”. #acaedmiclife
In a study of professors, women got 378 new work requests over 4 weeks vs 118 for men. Women spent more time on service, advising & teaching; men on research. Orgs should track who is taking extra duties & ensure they are rewarded and distributed fairly. www.forbes.com/sites/kimels...
