A few years ago I was able to stay in our dispute thanks to strike pay. I've made a donation here, and encourage other folks to donate if they are able.
Well that’s me locked out. No pay for the foreseeable future, all because I refuse to reschedule lost teaching, for which I have already lost pay as part of the strike. Please donate to support @sheffielducu.bsky.social members like me at www.gofundme.com/f/heubvb-sup...

This brings back bitter memories of when I was in the same position with colleagues at @qmucu.bsky.social a few years back.

Absolutely horrible behaviour from Sheffield management.

UK Universities cut 13,300 jobs, paid £300m+ in redundancy.

Economic contribution of the HE sector, £265bn.

Systematically destroyed by govts - foreign students not welcome, cut real-term grants, fees, students burdened with debts, low staff pay/morale.

Govt want skilled labour.

This shows how incompetent university senior management is: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Students pay much more in England, and yet the sector is still a shambles down here. And yet that is their plan to "save" Edinburgh.
Scottish students could pay towards tuition, says Edinburgh uni principal - BBC News
Prof Sir Peter Mathieson said that Scotland could adopt a "graduate repayment scheme" based upon salary.

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.

Just fuck you. Fuck you all.

I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

The project management tool I use to organise my work has recently added AI summaries of emails, which I can't turn off.

Today I added an email which contained a URL to my to do list. The LLM wrote a summary and provided a link to example.com/path/to/file instead of the actual URL.

Proposal: now that AGU has shrunk to 20k attendees, we can move it to Vienna and rebrand it as the AGUropean Autumn Meeting
Attendance at US-based science conferences is bouncing around this year but generally down. #AGU25 has ~10k fewer this year! I explored these trends for @nature.com — including solutions to keep conferences local & productive:

I've been teaching intro python this semester and it feels like this is the first year I've taught where gen AI has been so prevalent.

It's been very depressing seeing students outsourcing their thinking and learning to a chatbot.
