On a winter wander, I met a mossy Loch Ness monster — dozing among fallen leaves, halfway between myth and moss.
No monster at all, but a living root, softened by mosses and lichens, sheltering small lives.

Got a few new books of folktales and this one hit me hard: a public servant is sent to oversee a village and discovers that rich officials are extorting money and human sacrifices of the town's daughters to appease a vengeful river god. So, he tricks them and feeds the rich to the river instead. 1/2
