A lot of people already discussed this article which is annoying for blaming Taiwan for alleged "crisis" with CCP. CCP poured millions in defense when there are no threats and created a security dilemma for its neighbors who engage in self-defense but labeled aggressors.

This is great news. I helped bring Huayu Best to my institution (the name may have changed by now). These professors are here on J-1 visas which hopefully won't go the way of H1B.

Heard disappointing news yesterday that DOD killed the Project Global Officer program. Project GO supported US ROTC cadets in learning Arabic, Russian and Mandarin Chinese as well as the culture of places like Taiwan.

Reading U.S. docs JFK to Reagan regarding One China vs Two Chinas, Taiwan independence, etc. Policymakers consistently opposed either. My favorite quote comes from Nixon in 1972 convo with Kissinger/Haldeman: "That’s so goddamn—have you ever heard of the Taiwan Independence Movement?"

Here in Kaohsiung, visited Air Force Museum. Saw different MiG fighters and IL bomber that defected to Taiwan from the PRC. Saw F104‘s, F-5s and F 100s I watched flying over Taiwan back in the mid 80s. Also saw a couple of interesting flight simulators and massive UHF radios. Lotta things to see.

50 years ago, when the fall of Saigon was imminent, an iconic photo was taken of people clamoring to get on a helicopter on top of the Pittman Apts or old CIA building. Today, the building/shack remain, surrounded by modern buildings.
