ATproto is really, at its core, the idea that "the backend for SaaS web apps is just a Dropbox", and social web apps are just a specific form of this that agree on a schema.

That's it.

Everything else is quality-of-life (caching, availability) and standards around ID resolution.
This explanation of ATproto should be in more places
Like I had no idea that it was more than just an alternative to AP until now like I just knew it was decentralized and really complicated but this explains a lot more
Basically everything is just json. Apps publish a schema for a certain shape of data, be it a game of 2048 or a skeet or a wordle or a longform blog post (or really anything!). The account lives on the PDS, which sends all activity to relays and relays power data streams for apps

Really great talk that everybody should watch
📣 NEW w/@udbhav-tiwari.bsky.social Mapping the technical reality & privacy/security perils of pushing AI agents into our infra

We offer palliatives, but the core issues are paradigmatic: 'agency' relies on pervasive data access + ability to act w/o explicit consent
