What if we erased the gap between high school and higher education? What if we made applying to university as easy as transitioning from ninth to tenth grade? Those were questions asked by @senatorcabaldon.bsky.social and the inspiration for #SB640.

The CSU is grateful to Senator Christopher Cabaldon for his leadership in championing SB 640, and to Governor Gavin Newsom for signing this important legislation into law. 👏

This new policy will automatically admit qualified CA high school graduates to the CSU, removing barriers to #HigherEd.

These discoveries span decades and disciplines, but they all have one important thing in common: They’ve all relied on competitive funding from the federal government.

Stoked that @cagovernornewsom.bsky.social signed SB79. It barely passed--not a single vote to spare in 3 committees or on Senate floor twice. I voted yes all 5 times, after working w/Sen. @scottwiener.bsky.social to focus it on urban places w/strong or emergent transit networks. Giant step forward.

Update...the Governor signed my SB 351!
Private equity investment in medical and dental practices has soared 20-fold in the past 15 years. My SB 351, which passed the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday, would strengthen protections against the profit motive interfering with patient care.

Very proud to have written Senate Bill 640 to get this done, and grateful for unanimous bipartisan support of the Legislature, signature of the Governor & partnership with @calstate.bsky.social.
No application required: Cal State to automatically admit qualified students under new law
High school students hoping to attend California State University will soon be admitted automatically under a new law — as long as their grades are good enough to get in.

Proud to have been a partner in delivering this breakthrough for drivers and simultaneously cutting rideshare costs for California riders.
I just signed legislation allowing the 800,000 rideshare workers in California to unionize.

California is determined to give working people a voice, to give them choice, give them dignity, and give them a say about their future.

Two of the six counties in my Senate district collected point-in-time unsheltered homeless counts this year. Kudos to Sonoma (down 29%) & Contra Costa (down 35%) for leading the ENTIRE state with local progress.

I just introduced legislation based on initial lessons of what went horribly & inexcusably wrong at the massive fireworks explosion in Esparto that killed seven & devastated the community.

My SB 371, passed today on an overwhelming vote, will provide immediate financial relief to Californians by lowering the cost of rideshare services like Uber & Lyft. Governor Newsom has already announced his support. sd03.senate.ca.gov/news/legisla...

Labor Day: Proud that the Governor just came out for Senate Bill 371, my legislation to slash "government-imposed" fees on Uber & Lyft rides (up to 45% of the fare). In tandem w/AB 1340, will also create a path for 800,000+ rideshare drivers to organize into a union. Giant win for riders & drivers.
Newsom, California lawmakers strike deal that would allow Uber, Lyft drivers to unionize
Gov. Gavin Newsom and California lawmakers on Friday announced a deal with Uber and Lyft on a bill that would allow hundreds of thousands of rideshare drivers to form unions and bargain collectively while still being classified as independent contractors.

Today I stood with colleagues from Congress, the state Senate and the Assembly to say California will fight back if Texas uses redistricting to prevent voters from showing their anger over kidnappings, cuts to health care, and tax cuts for billionaires but higher taxes (tariffs) on everyone else.

TL;DR: cities & counties in our Senate district lead Bay Area in meeting housing goals, outperforming SF by 95-1400%. Tops: American Canyon, Napa County, Solano County, Calistoga, Oakley, Sonoma County, Rohnert Park, Sonoma, Brentwood, Napa, Yountville, St Helena.

The Bay Area is lagging on housing goals. List shows Walnut Creek and Daly City among furthest behind
A quarter of the way into the current housing cycle, the region has permitted less than 10% of its state-mandated target.
