The greatest games became great because of developer passion, not process
They look at a hit and the money it makes and they go, "yes, give me that, I want that." Their companies buy the studios that make those games and they squeeze out the talent and creativity that made the hit. They don't understand any of that. They just see the product. Make me another product.

A lot of the business failures of the games industry are really rooted in this desire to create a product that dominates the market. The recent Amazon thing really highlights that: they wanted to create a product that outperformed Steam, but they didn't understand Steam or what the audience wanted.
