RANDOM FACTS ABOUT THE ORNATE OCTOPUS:

- they hunt nocturnally on fish and crustaceans.
- they are usually found on coral reefs.
- their stomachs have been found to contain the beaks of other octopus species, which means they are predators to their own kind.

How about a more unusual octopus this morning? This is the Hawaii-endemic O. ornatus, the Ornate or Night octopus. Long, slinky, move more like eels than cephalopods sometimes, just a beautiful animal, only to be seen on night dives. 🦑📷🌿🐙

The smallest squids are the aptly named Pygmy squids (order Idiosepida), with their mantle length reaching about 2 cm and weighing less that 0.2 g.

They are known as the "Post-It notes of the sea", since they will glue themselves to sea grass in order to ambush their prey.

This painting is going to be super time insensitive. I just started a bit of the background coral texture today - woof, send prayers. 😅😭

Follow along to watch me suffer for the glory of crustaceans!

I finally hit a point where I can leave coral and start blocking in the reef crab! 🦀

Dr. Philippe Bouchet & Dr. Peter Ng discovered Actaea Grimaldi. Their research was funded by the Prince of Monaco.

fun fact: the squishy, fatty, bulbous curve of a beluga whale's forehead is called a ‘melon’! not only does it help project sounds when they utilise echolocation, but they also use their melons to communicate in a manner similar to facial expressions. »

cuttlefish have been consistently observed communicating with one another by waving, though it hasn't yet been deciphered what these displays mean with any specificity. it is known that their methods of communication are complex & entail many factors such as skin colour, patterning, and posture.

this otherworldly diva is a cerianthus filiformi! they're tube-dwelling sea anenomes that can be found in the western indo-pacific ocean. they can retract their tentacles (used to feed on drifting food) back into their tube if they feel threatened or wish to rest.

facts about the giant australian cuttlefish:
- they're molluscs (a diverse label most typically associated with shelled invertebrates) and not fish at all.
- as a result of evolution, modern-day cuttlefish have internalised their shell into what is known as ’cuttlebone‘ within their mantle. »
