I haven’t (yet) seen Grand Illusion but it’s on my list.

Some of those Hitchcock films it’s been years since I’ve seen them. I’m doing a slow rewatch of them so will likely move some of them around

Highlighting the Bonaventure’s appearances in pop culture but skipping over IT’S A LIVING is a sin

Didn’t spend a lot of time on new-ish movies but have been catching up on critics’ darlings and Oscar nominees. Favorites so far:

One Battle
Sentimental Value
Sinners

Thought F1 was a joke.

Highly recommend WOODEN CROSSES, a brilliant WWI film that is sort of a French take on ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT and also a clear influence on SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Available on Criterion Channel.
My favorite fist-time watches of Jan:

La Chienne (Renoir, 1931)
Wooden Crosses (Bernard, 1932)
High Noon (Zinnemann, 1952)
A Farewell to Arms (Borzage, 1932)
Grand Hotel (Goulding, 1932)
Red River (Hawks, 1948)
Passing Fancy (Ozu, 1933)
The Front Page (Milestone, 1931)
The Milky Way (McCarey, 1936)

Yeah it really is great. I’ve got “a” voice for singing but I certainly don’t have *that* voice. Could never do what he does.

But my favorite find of them all is THE FANTASTIC EXPEDITION OF DILLARD & CLARK, which is my very favorite thing Gene Clark ever did, Byrds included. Doubly happy to find this after recently finding his Gosdin Bros album which I like almost as much.

There are always Kristofferson albums in the bins but never the ones I actually want, until today. His second album is also his second-best.

Picked up the Marty Robbins album at the flea market for $10. Worth it for “El Paso” alone but the whole album is terrific. Most of his other albums are hit and miss but I love this one.

Best deal in the bunch = UK SQUEEZE, just $3 and plays great!

Bought the same day as the La Luz record. Always happy to find a newer (21st century) album in the used bins. It doesn’t happen often enough.

Catching up with documenting the last few record purchases of the month, from my usual haunts Record Surplus (West LA) and Atomic Records (Burbank), plus one from the Long Beach Flea Market

Looking at the full list of all Oscar nominations and it’s wild that only 8 movies were released this year.

Oh, yay! There was carping about Tropical Fuck Storm in the comments so I did not think they were going to come out of this round - let alone take the heat!

Rewatched IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT tonight, ugh that movie is perfect.

I rewatched Hitchcock’s 1932 film NUMBER SEVENTEEN last night, for the fist time in maybe 15 or 20 years. I’d forgotten how truly terrible it is. It’s shocking to think Hitchcock could make something this inept.

Both the westerns were good but didn’t bowl me over. I don’t think that’s a controversial thing to say about BIG SKY, but maybe it is with RIO BRAVO. I think I’m just not into the John Wayne brand of western. It was good and entertaining, but didn’t rise above that for me.

In the last week or so I watched two more Howard Hawks films—BIG SKY (1952) and, today, RIO BRAVO (1959). As far as a chronological watch of all his films, sadly there are a bunch of mid-period films not currently on streaming (I WAS A MALE WAR BRIDE, MONKEY BUSINESS, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES).

Also, my appeal to the electorate: there are so many excellent ambient albums from ‘01! Hope more people nominate Stars of the Lid, Labradford, Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Jan Jelinick, Windy & Carl, Loscil.

(Shout out to Kranky who were the best label of 2001… most of those albums plus Low!)

I won’t apologize for liking the Travis album as much as I do. Nor will I apologize for thinking REVEAL is excellent.

I will apologize for still liking that Whiskeytown record. I’m sorry.

My noms for the best albums of ‘01.
(My color coding:
Green = this album perfect and has special meaning/associations
Pink = this album is amazing but maybe just lacks that personal nostalgia factor
Blue = this album is very good
Grey = this album is spotty but the good parts are great)
