On Friday the 13th, screenwriters only fear 3 things: the blinking cursor of a blank page, rewriting Act II, and a film comes out with a storyline eerily similar to your own.

I love screenwriting SO MUCH

Finding a concept is FASCINATING

Developing a plot is DELIGHTFUL

Shaping a character is STIMULATING

Thinking up dialogue is THRILLING

Writing a logline is

Choosing a title is CAPTIVATING

Screenwriters, remember your HOOK is your story’s existential statement.

It’s what makes your story original. Not a micro-summary of your plot or a regurgitation of your logline.

The classic example is, “It’s A meets B.”

For example:
Glengarry Glen Ross meets Squid Game

Me: I'm gonna start writing at 10am sharp.

Me, at 10am sharp: I need a song to set the mood for this scene. *proceeds to spend 30 minutes looking for a song I think works*

The song has not been found. 😆

“Movies don’t look hard, but figuring it out, getting the shape of it, getting everybody’s character right, and having it be funny, make sense and be romantic, it’s creating a puzzle.”

“The characters in my films try to live honestly and make the most of the lives they’ve been given. I believe you must live honestly and develop your abilities to the full. People who do this are the real heroes.”

Just a reminder that no script competition or coverage service can really guarantee that their readers won’t use AI.

But the Gauntlet can.

We're so thankful to have met Mark Garbett and to read his Gauntlet Endorsed script THESE DARK PLACES. This isn't his first rodeo, either. Mark has had multiple projects made, and it's not surprising as he knows how to craft an incredible thriller.

“A screenplay is an exploration. It’s about the thing you don’t know. It’s a step into the abyss. It necessarily starts somewhere, anywhere; there is a starting point, but the rest is undetermined.”

Read your dialogue out loud.

Acting out your dialogue is one of the most valuable techniques you can use as a screenwriter. And it’s a simple step to add to your revision process.
