Centuries ago, many astronomical books included moving parts to help readers interpret the world around them.

This biscuit recreates a diagram from Sacrobosco’s ‘De Sphaera’ (c.1550). It could be used to calculate the changing length of daylight hours through the year. 🍪

A great thread about an astonishing naval battle! For me, the battle of Quiberon is also a perfect example of why we should reconsider how we think about naval battles and commanders. Let's face it: Hawke was lucky that his daring decision to follow the French worked out in his favour.
#OTD 1759– The Battle of Quiberon Bay

The battle which inspired ‘Heart of Oak’ & stopped French plans to invade Britain. Mahan wrote that it was 'the Trafalgar of the Seven Years War'

24 British ships of the line under Edward Hawke engaged 21 French, commanded by Marshal de Conflans

Great question and even greater answers.
Personally, I can’t remember what exactly sparked my interest. Probably my history classes at school and some historic youth novels, mainly on 20th century German history.
Dear fellow historians: I recently asked my undergraduate students what sparked their interest in studying history. Two of them mentioned the film Titanic! Now I'm curious (and will let them know): What sparked your interest in studying #history?

It‘s here 🙏🏼🤓 the latest issue of Werkstatt Geschichte 90: violence (hi)stories. How do we talk about everyday violence? Heartfelt thanks to my fab coeditor @mouseemperor.bsky.social and @sarahvha.bsky.social. It started with a long discussion about a text…we definitely need an ongoing discussion!
