Butterfly populations falling on average 1.3% per year in the continental US, with some populations falling by as much as 40%. With 650 recorded species, only 342 were present in enough numbers to calculate trends.

The coolest thing I’ve seen today is that a bunch of volunteer public health professionals and developers have restored the CDC website from before January 20th 2025.

This differs from an archive in that they want to rebuild the links between pages and replicate the full website.

January 2025 was quite unexpectedly the warmest January on record at 1.75C above preindustrial, beating the prior record set in 2024.

This is despite the presence of La Niña conditions in the tropical Pacific, with the El Niño event of 2023/2024 long faded. www.theclimatebrink....

Meta’s decision to deemphasize hashtags was never about user experience. It was about control.

Hashtags are a user-generated, bottom-up means of organizing content. Algorithms are company-driven and top-down. With hashtags, we control what we see. With algorithms, they control what we see.
