Hm, MurderBot is to be played by a man but I now realize I’ve always pictured them as a woman. Maybe bc they are constantly exhausted by the neediness of humans and always needing to take care of others, I dunno, just feels like a woman’s experience 😂 what do you think?

As eyes turn towards the authoritarian overreach into US post-secondary education, the same thing is about to happen in Alberta. The Provincial Priorities Act (formerly Bill 18) comes into force on April 1, 2025. The article below outlines how academics will now need approval for federal grants.
Bill 18 positions Alberta government as gatekeeper of federal research funding - University Affairs
Opponents say it poses a threat to academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and the future of the postsecondary sector in Alberta.

“The idea of the news as the view from nowhere has to die.”

I couldn’t agree more. Neutrality doesn’t exist - we are all people with values and points of view, & that includes journalists, scientists, academics. What matters is how we express those perspectives and stand in those values.

Anyways my hot take is one of the more effective nation building exercises Canada 🇨🇦 could undergo would be making it easier to see other parts of this country. It should be as easy to get to Montreal, Iqaluit and Banff as it is to see Vegas, Dublin and Puerto Vallarta if you want unity

This article by @drewyewchuk.bsky.social is a great case study on the Species At Risk Act in Canada. Cases like these are the reason why many of us wildlife biologists see SARA is a weak piece of legislation. It is simply not enforced and industry interests prevail.

Thought I’d share an oldie! This is one of the first digital artworks I did that I really liked. Bighorn Sheep are iconic species of the Alberta Rockies. I have a soft spot for them as they always remind me of family road trips. #SciArt

I think Canada should follow the lead the US is setting and appoint a random 19-year-old as the Fentanyl Czar.

On the cover: an excellent essay by @melwoods.me that helps us make sense of the social media shift taking place right now.

Working on this piece sparked a weird side quest to Understand Mark Zuckerberg (I may never). 🧵

In a world of turmoil, be the homemade Toadette plushie my mom made for my friend. Absurdly, my mom says it’s supposed to be a phone holder.

My friend’s roommates have positioned Toadette in the sun to protect her from their cats. My friend reports “Toadette is integrating so well”

Everything is falling apart and it’s crazy, but hey, it’s also an opportunity to divest ourselves of (the most) unethical corporations. Let’s hit them where it hurts - our money and time.

THIS. We have to get away from the idea that science is perfectly neutral. It’s not - what research gets funded vs what doesn’t is politically and societally driven. (Scientists are also not robots, they are human like the rest of us - they follow passions and curiosities.) 🧪🌎
After seeing multiple statements by professional societies in the earth and space sciences this week refer to science as "bipartisan" or "nonpartisan" I feel very strongly that the least, the absolute LEAST, any of us can do right now is admit that science is deeply political at all levels
