Making AI useful, not hyped

regulation and business models are late-stage refinements, not root causes of AI stagnation. Businesses are likely to fail far earlier in data infrastructure, talent depth and coherent strategy.

US, where AI investment and adoption have been most prominent, the rise in the S&P 500 and corresponding drop in job openings from around 2023 has been cited as evidence of a tech-linked hit to workers. But zooming in, things change.

News: Anthropic publishes first large-scale study of “disempowerment” patterns in AI assistant use. Severe cases where AI meaningfully warps users’ beliefs, values, or actions are rare but non-trivial at scale, especially in emotionally charged, personal decisions

AI is really acting like this magic potion with not so magical qualities. The density of articles on AI bubbles has been the highest in the last quarter than prior ones

some transformation is bound to happen but costs exceed revenue by a long distance

Did a deep-dive month-by-month count of “AI bubble” chatter in 2025 media: The chart reveals flat early-2025 activity followed by a sharp Q4 acceleration in both metrics. Focused bubble pieces grew 433% year-over-year (3→16), outpacing totals (192%, 12→35)

so i've noticed something interesting in my work with enterprises lately.

everyone talks about the EU AI Act like it's the villain in this story. but if i ask them "have you actually inventoried your training data sources?" they usually go quiet.

AI Adoption’s Real Enemy: Not Really Regulation, But Everything Else
Putting the evidence together, it becomes clear that regulation and business models are late-stage refinements, not root causes of AI stagnation.

If models increasingly train on model outputs, we're creating a hall of mirrors where AI no longer reflects human reality but instead generates increasingly refined approximations of approximations. At what point does machine learning become machine inbreeding?

Let’s not forget that Monsanto still exists. With hunt of open AI won’t work. Its own business model will decide its demise. Revenues aren’t enough to cover capex.

Mediocrity is AI s greatest challenge
Remember:

When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them.

When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips.

ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides

AI’s barely out of diapers, but suddenly everyone ‘saw it coming 10 years ago.’
We didn’t gain experts; we upgraded our fear of being invisible. In a world that pays in views instead of dignity, pretending to know AI has become just another survival skill.

Everyone blames AI regulation. Yet surveys show ~80% of IT leaders say data infrastructure is the real bottleneck, and ~40% of execs point to talent gaps.

Ask, If laws stood frozen for 5 years, would AI projects still stall for the same reasons?

Value creation requires solving constrained optimization problems.

AI currently excels at pattern recognition, not constraint satisfaction.

Example: Optimizing supply chains requires balancing cost, speed, reliability, quality—simultaneously.

AI can't yet do this.

Historical pattern: Tech bubbles occur when capital flows to narrative rather than fundamentals.

1999: "Internet changes everything"
2024: "AI changes everything"

Both true. Both overvalued initially.

Implication: Real transformation takes longer than hype cycles suggest.

Bubble warning: Investors prioritize story over fundamentals.

Dot-com era: "Eyeballs" > Revenue

AI era: "Potential" > Profitability

When capital allocation decouples from economic reality, corrections follow.

Implication: AI investment needs business model scrutiny.

The iPhone replaced multiple devices:
• Camera + Phone + iPod + Browser

Current AI tools are add-ons, not replacements.

They create new workflows rather than streamlining existing ones.

Implication: AI needs integration into daily work, not separate platforms.

Why did the iPhone's touchscreen succeed while voice assistants remain peripheral?

Touchscreens:
• Immediate visual feedback
• No ambiguity
• User in control

Voice/text AI:
• Unpredictable outputs
• No visual confirmation
• Trust gap

Implication: AI needs interface redesign.

AI hasn't had its "iPhone moment" yet.

General-purpose AI platforms like ChatGPT are impressive but not transformative.

The iPhone succeeded because:
• Seamless integration
• Solved real workflow problems
• Natural interaction design

AI still lacks this.

The C-suite strategy gap is more critical than talent or infrastructure.

Without executive-level AI strategy:
• Disconnected pilot projects
• No integration roadmap
• Organizational misalignment

Implication: AI requires business model thinking, not feature additions.

40% of companies cite talent gaps as AI's primary obstacle.

The missing capability isn't ML expertise—it's systems thinking:

How do data, models, and business processes interconnect?

Implication: AI adoption requires architectural thinking, not just data science.

Most AI failures occur at the foundation layer—before regulation becomes relevant.

Data problems:
• 83% cite poor infrastructure
• Disconnected systems
• Legacy tech debt

By the time regulation arrives, the battle is lost.

Implication: Regulatory debate distracts from fundamentals.

74% of companies fail to scale AI - but NOT because of regulation or business models.

The real killers?
• Poor data infrastructure (83%)
• Talent gaps (40%)
• Missing C-suite strategy

Most AI failures happen BEFORE companies ever touch regulatory compliance.

Uncomfortable truth:

Companies spending $10B+ on AI tools.
Yet 54% of AI projects still fail.

Why?

We're solving the wrong problem.

The bottleneck isn't technology.
It's strategy, culture, and execution.

But strategy doesn't come in a SaaS package.

7 strategic frameworks.
$100M+ in transformations.
One lesson:

Strategy beats technology. Every. Single. Time.

Your AI tool is only as good as:
• Your business model
• Your execution
• Your market understanding

Stop buying tools. Start building strategy.

The AI bubble question:

Are we in a bubble? Maybe. But it's not market-wide.

It's segmented:
• Infrastructure = Real value
• Specialized models = Sustainable
• Generic wrappers = Overvalued

Invest in picks & shovels, not gold rush hype.
