Moving victims of violence from crisis to confidence for 40 years.
1 in 3 New Yorkers identifies as a survivor of violence. That reality must inform how we govern, how we respond, and how we care for one another.

We love New York. Let's make it a place where every person is safe in their community, home, body, and mind. www.safehorizon.org/statements-a...

Intro 1297 would clarify the Gender-Motivated Violence Act (GMVA) to ensure survivors can hold institutions accountable for past abuse. It would also reopen the lookback window from March 2026 to March 2027.

Justice shouldn't have an expiration date. Survivors cannot wait one more day.

Trauma takes time, and our laws must align with the realities of trauma.

Elizabeth Ebright, Safe Horizon’s Director of Research and Evaluation, testified at City Hall last week, urging @council.nyc.gov to pass Intro 1297.

We’re calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to make the SAFE Shelter Act a top budget priority so that safe domestic violence shelter is accessible for every survivor.

Tell the Governor to support the SAFE Shelter Act: act.safehorizon.org/safe-act
New York's current funding system to providers is denying shelter to single adult survivors, including LGBTQ+ survivors, trafficking survivors, and older adults.

Watch our Vice President of Shelter Operations Olga Rodriguez-Vidal explain how this creates an impossible bind for providers.

We call on USCIS to swiftly increase T visa approvals and prioritize protection for trafficking survivors. Every approval is a step toward a safer life.
Every trafficking survivor deserves a path to safety, and immigration status is a crucial part. But USCIS data shows T visa denials are sadly on the rise in FY2025, outpacing approvals for those who need a lifeline most.

New York’s current domestic violence shelter system makes it incredibly difficult for single adult survivors of domestic and gender-based violence to access life-saving shelter. The SAFE Shelter Act changes that by ensuring shelters get full funding to house single adult survivors.

The DOJ has canceled over $810 million in grants to nonprofits working in violence prevention. When orgs lose funding, it’s a direct hit to the safety nets that protect our communities. These cuts threaten to reduce services for survivors at a time when they need us most. apnews.com/article/publ...

Every survivor has the right to safety and justice. Undermining those protections through careless, dismissive rhetoric puts lives at risk and weakens the very systems meant to keep people safe.

Words like these normalize abuse. They send a message to survivors—that violence in the home is somehow less serious, that their pain is not real, and that the law should look the other way. But domestic violence is a crime. And it is rooted in power and control, not in disagreements.
